A new twist in fertilizing plants

While I was placing an order from Extremepumpkinstore.com for Actinovate I came across Organic feeder packs from Xtreme Gardening products from RTI. As they were and are on sale for a 50 pack bag I went ahead and ordered a bag. I've seen the fertilizer sticks but not the pouches. When I planted out my surrogate I placed one bag on each side of the plant and covered. I also did the same thing a couple weeks ago when I planted my containers.
I think these pouches would also work great in SWC's (Tainers) to supplement the fertilizer strips. The results so far seem promising as my surrogate garden has really taken off. It's still to early to tell on the container plant outs. A word of note on the Extreme Pumpkin store is I have always gotten excellent service and they carry some unique products for those that want to push the growing envelope. 8-4-4 seem like odd numbers for Tomatoes, but WTFDIK.

Looking forward to hearing how it does for you. I'm in Houston now, will be back in Copenhagen on the 14th, and probably 2 years before I'll have a garden again.

I have seen these at a hardware store near my house. They also have the Mykos. Prices seem the same. I fertigate because I just can't get to the spots that need food mid and late season, this would be great.

Ami,

In your photo #8, it shows the Net Weight as: "1 lb / 4.5 Kg". While I never paid attention to the Metric System in school, something doesn't seem to be correct.

Further, the individual 50 packets show a weight of 0.3 ounces. So that would sum up to 15 ounces for the package - which is closer to the 1 lb label.

Someone at RTI needs to do a little Math.

Good catch Ray. If you look at the front of the pkg it says 1lb/450grams which is correct. Maybe we ought to hit them up for the missing 4050 grams. Ami

Their Myko products are supposed to be one of the best ones out there. And there Azos product is well liked by "other" growers.

Curious how the packets do for you.

Isn't that about the same as what osmocote does? I remember using some 9 month all purpose osmocote on container trees years ago.
I did a search for Osmocote and Tomatoes and believe it or not, I got a hit from right here at Tomatoville, and you happen to be in it. One quote is: "alot of Tvillians use Miracle Grow for tomatoes and it is 15-30-15. Since you are talking about slow release I don't believe you would have any problems with the 17-17-17. Ami "
Is that an osmocote formula? Do they have a special one for tomatoes? If they do, how would the bags be any different?

Don, that thread goes back to "07", time flys when your growing maters. What caught my eye on the pouches was;
1. Easy to use (Pouch form)
2. Organic
3. 8-4-4 NPK which is suitable for mycorrhiza inoculated plants
4. Can be used with other fertilizer regimens especially those that are quickly absorbed by the root structure as the organic fert pouchs release the nutrients more slowly.

Awesome! So when you use Azos, do you normally supplement any other source(s) of nitrogen? And do you use Azos by itself, during "veg" stage, and switch over to something "bloom" friendly, when the plant is in the blooming stage?

Wow they have 9 month Osmocote now? I remember the yellow-coated stuff lasted 3 months.

Azos "Azospirillum Brasilense" works with mycorrhiza in making more nitrogen available to the plant. I use it on plant out to give the plant an initial nitrogen boost to increase plant growth. I supplement my plants with organic ferts during the entire life of the plant when growing in containers. In my surrogate raised bed I add new organic matter every year plus horse manure and organic ferts that pretty much satisfy the plants need for the entire growing season. But still add 3 tbls molasses to 10 liters of water 3-4 times during the veg stage. Ami

How did the Xtreme gardening organic feeder packs end up working out for you last season? I bought them this year and used 4 packets per 5 gallon pot. If I remember right, it was one feeder pack per gallon container. Can't say that my plants look wonderful or that they are loaded with tomatoes tho!
I did use your "dip" mixture also. Is there something else I could be adding for the rest of the season? I have a partial bag of TomatoTone around...
