need recommendations for a composter

Anyone have recommendations for a decent composter? I don't want to use an open pile because of the rodent/raccoon/skunk issues we have... I was looking at a recycled olive barrel bulk type - what kinds have you had good experiences with?

I dont compost open because of the same issues-well, the truth is, my wife wont let me! I compost with bokashi composting. I make my own inoculant, and its been very successful so far.

They sell buckets, and inoculant, etc that are way too expensive. I made my own buckets, bought the wheat bran, bought a bottle of the em-1 and have been composting all our food scraps.

If you are just composting food scraps, this works very well.

There is a great wholesale fruit tree nursery in CA, (Dave Wilson Nursery) that has been producing a series of short videos, mainly about the planting and care of fruit trees. They are collectively calling these videos Fruit Tube. I recently watched a four part series comparing home composters. They have some suggestions which may be of help to you.

I have a ComposTumbler. I found it on CraigsList for $50. They are spendy if you buy them new. It works well.

I drilled a bunch of holes on the ends of a 55 gal drum. I toss my compostables in there and get my grandkids to roll it around the yard. My compost gets turned and the kids get tired. I get great compost and grandkids that can sit still for more than a minute.
