Produce Pete, NBC's produce guru, claimed this morning on national TV:

" No, no, sunlight does not ripen tomatoes!!! It is moonlight that ripens tomatoes "

Any truth to this?

Can't tell. When I look at my tomatos in the dark they all look the same.

No, Produce Pete was serious. Produce pete also thinks:

Cat Face happens on the stem end.
Ugly Ripe means picking tomatoes when they are really ripe, and it always causes cat facing.
Shouldering is the same as brusing.
etc. etc.

And he is supposed to be the expert.

Pete is right, but not because of the moonlight per se. The moon exerts its strongest influence as it waxes full, encouraging ripening.

Best be careful...

...if you let your tomatoes get exposed to too much moonlight, they'll all end up white tomatoes

Bright Full Moon tonight. It is the first August Moon
that I can remember that has not risen reddish-
orange. It rose a milky yellow and has since cooled
in color. More like an Autumn or Spring moon.
The weather turned super today, warm but very dry.

By the way, I seemed to have lost or misplaced
a post somewhere around here. If anyone knows
of its' whereabouts, please contact me....JJ61
