Green Doctors trumps all other cherries for taste IMO!

Its either a tomato you love or hate. I love the depth of taste it has with also being somewhat sweet. Not fruity and sweet like Sun Gold which I also enjoy. Its my favorite cherry of all time! My mother and brother are here today and they also loved the taste of GD over anything else as far as cherries go.

I really love GD and GDF too, both deliciously sweet. I'm growing them again this year and also trying Verde Claro, very much looking forward to tasting this one.

Do GD and GDF taste the same? I've grown GDF, just don't like greenish yellow colors, so I thought GDF looked more appetizing.

They have similarities in taste, but they are definitely different - and, IMO, both very good to excellent. I'm not good at describing taste, so I won't even go there.

I prefer GD simply because you can easily tell when it's ripe - not so with GDF.

I love both GD and GDF and I haven't detected any major difference in taste between them and I also love Verde Claro, another clear skinned green when ripe/

Considering the background of where GD came from it doesn't surprise me at all that it does have a depth of taste, as mentioned above.

Let me explain.

The variety Dr. Carolyn, which I did not name, and is an ivory colored cherry tomato that came from a growout of my saved seeds from Galina, a gold PL cherry which I also love and is not that sweet but for me is delicious. GD came from the variety Dr. Carolyn. Then several folks at about the same time found a clear skinned version of GD which they reported and has been discussed here.

I offered both GD and GDF in two of my recent seed offers here at Tville.

So I think the taste of both comes from some Galina genes that went along for the ride, if you will.

Last year I grew both Galina's and GDF. Must admit, I preferred the taste of GDF, although Galina's was fine.

This year for the first time i grow Green Doctors Frosted.
I choosed this one because somebody told me that GDF tastes better than GD that also tastes very good ...

For next year i am planing an experiment with: Galina - Dr. Carolyn - Dr. Carolyn pink - Green Doctors - and also Verde Claro.

There is lots of documentaion that the green doctors circulating is not stable for skin color. Flavor genetics are a lot more complx than skin color so we can assume te chances are both green doctors and green doctors frosted are both unstable for flavor. this is no doubt true of many of the new OP varieties that are floating around.

it sounds like sportsguy76 is fortunate to have a segregant that has isolated good flavors. Lets hope he shares seed. perhaps others who are not so fortunate should not save or circulate seed.

Swamper, what kind of documentation are you referring to b'c that's not my understanding of the situation.

I know that at another message site where I no longer read that one person was suggesting that the difference between Green Doctors, ( yellow epidemis) and Green Doctors Frosted ( presumably a clear epidermis) was not due to a change in the epidermis.

But if you look for some back threads here at Tville you'll find the lovely pictures that we kind of forced Jeff of Heirloom Seeds of Airdrie to take a look at and photograph. At the same time there were Jeff in Canada and Neil in IL and maybe it was Lee of J and L seed site who all got what we decided to call frosted.

And I see no difference in the fruit color of the frosted version than I do with Tom Wagner's Verde Claro, with a known Clear epidermis.

Is "stuff" happening spontaneously, meaning genetics, maybe b'c I'm remember two summers ago when Adam Gleckler was wandering through his tomato fields talking on his cell phone to me and telling me what % of his GD's were now frosted, if you will.

But I haven't noticed any feedback from someone who grows the frosted version back to the original GD, which may or may not be significant. And same for the reverse. Maybe it's just a matter of the number of plants put out since Jaff and Lee have commercial seed sites and Neil lists about 600 varieties in the SSE Yearbooks/

As for taste, no two people taste the same variety in the same way since taste is perceputal and personal and even has a human genetic component, so I hesitate when someone says I like this one better than that one for GD vs GDF. The same thing was said when there was a project here at Tville trying to tell the difference between Champagne Cherry and Coyote, both small translucent cherries.

I have several plants, and so far taste-wise they have been a disappointment. Not bad, just not outstanding for me. Maybe its just my taste buds. Or maybe they will taste better later in the season. I have only had a couple ripen. I also have coyote, which I thought was a disappointment, very bland and mushy sweet, then I tried some just as they developed a slight yellowing on the top and still looked green 3/4 the way down, what a difference, sweet with firmness and a little kick. What is funny, my wife likes them best fully ripe, and detests them at the stage I like them!!! Just goes to show you. I have not given up on GD yet, need to try at various stages to see what I like best.

Green Doctors is not for everyone thats for sure, it has a very unique flavor you either love or dont. I too like them a little before they get dead ripe.

I found a accidental cross of GD's a few years ago and have been working on stabilizing one of its teriffic offspring. As soon as its stable I will make an offering here!

Julia- If you need seeds of GD let me know.

Damon, on mine I don't notice anything unique at all, again it may just be me. I have been eating them on the less ripe side. I have to let a couple get more ripe to see if I like that. I will probably not grow Coyote again. They are small and just too difficult to get them at just the right stage. For me coyotes are a spitter once they get uniformly pale yellow. My daughter was over tonite for BLT's, she tried them and thought the same as me. The wife loves them, for me they have a funny after taste.

Open mouth insert foot. I was not letting the GD's ripen enough. Now that I have eaten one at the proper stage of ripeness, I do agree, they are quite special. Once they turned more brownish-golden-yellow with just a hint of olive green at the top they were perfect. They are very slow ripening and I kept trying more and not letting them ripen. They seem to have a very long shelf life, nice firm texture and kinda like a firm grape. With a beautiful light green interior, my bad, an excellent and very different cherry. Carolyn, if I bend over will you kick me as hard as you can?
