Default WOW! Great Tomato - Thanks Tania

This year I grew out seeds that I got from Tania for a variety that she called "Bulgarian Old Sort - No Name". The "no-name" fascinated me and I just had to see what it was. Well, I'm ready to give it a few names, like "Wonderful" and "Huge" and "Old Fashioned Tasty" and "Grow It Again" and "Permanent Grow List".

When each of us grow new-to-us varieties each year, we all are hoping for a totally unique find that will become part of our "Every Year List". Well, this one hit the target for me.

What a find!!! Not only are they large, but they are just firm enough to allow thin slices (1/4") and cover the entire slice of sandwich bread.

Tania, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!!!!

You folks have just got to try this one. Here's a first picture. I have more pictures with the next harvest.
This tomato is a red, meaty, oblate, globe, with small seed locules.
WOW!!!

A bit of back story here.

The seeds were from Phreddy (user name) who is from the UK who summers in Bulgaria and Indonesia in the winter and flies back to the UK from time to time.

He sent seeds to both Tania and myself but called them by different names.

Old Sort to one of us and No name to the other, I think, and he did so b'c I'd told him how much I love Bulgarian tomatoes.

I listed this in the SSE YEarbooks and gave both names but I don't remember what year that was and it's so darn hot here right now with a severe T-Storm watch out that I'm not going to look.

Tania, I'm pretty sure I remember correctly that there were another 2 or 3 varieties he sent as well and I can't speak for you but I know I had problems germinating them and he sent VERY FEW seeds of those.

How is your memory today and I ask b'c I think mine is losing brain cells due to the heat and humidity.

Carolyn, the year was 2009, you listed it in 2010 as Unnamed Bulgarian -- in the RED section, where Tania still has it listed for 2012.

It was red when I grew it in 2009 also.

Ted, Bulgarian Old Sort No Name/Unnamed Bulgarian shouldn't be pink -- check the epidermis. The epi should be yellow rather than clear.

I agree, it's an awesome tomato .

Thanks for checking for me b'c I was pretty sure, actually positive, that I'd listed it. And yes, red. No doubt I still have some seeds around here somewhere, but don't ask me where.

This afternonn I've been getting more and more concerned as I track those wicked T-storms that are supposed to hit pretty soon. If it weren't for the fact that my home was hit by lightning several years ago and it came in right through the large window, and knocked out almsot everything. And without my phone, medi-alert system, etc. I'm kind of lost. And I sure can't get out of the house very fast with my walker.

I wish my cat would understand why I'm not letting her out but T-storms spook her , so I'd rather have her inside where we can be spooked together.

Crandrew, I do the best I can with the remaining brain cells I have, but it's Craig L ( nctomatoman) who has the photographic memory, trust me on that.

I stand corrected. When I first looked at the skin, I didn't compare it and it appeared to be VERY clear. However, the comparison showed me my error. I have corrected the first post also.

Bulgarian Old Sort is a "RED".

Here's a Pix.

Well, it seems that a lot of folks want to grow this one. All my extra seed for this variety is now promised out to folks. I'll have more in the fall. Perhaps some others here may have a few extras, but I'm now officially tapped out.

It's a beefsteak, not a heart. Still a great tomato though.

Ted, should you find you have about 5 seeds this fall, I would be interested as I will be starting another round of plants come November.
