growing tomatoes
Can I grow different kinds of tomatoes together without them crossing with each other ? And if not ,how far apart do the plants need to be? I have a small garden and I put my plants as close together as I can. If any one could answer this I would appreciate it, thanks.

I space my plants approx. 3.5 ft apart.
I group the same variety together. When it comes to pollination I do not rely on bee's or wind to do the job. Instead I manipulate the bloom to release pollen using an electric toothbrush. This would greatly reduce the chances of cross pollination from occurring since the pollen has already been released in a controlled environment. Julia

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've grown plants with 2 foot spacing and had no crossing.

I think this is one of the best articles I know of having to do with how to prevent cross pollination. it was one of several articles that was a group effort at GW when many of us still posted there before many made the move to Tville when it opened in Jan of 2006. Please read through the article, with pictures, and if you have any questions just ask them here in your own thread. I've posted this link many times here in the past but there are so many new members that I'm sure doing it again might be a help to many who have the same question.

thanks
wow thats a lot of info, thanks everyone. I will have to wait till next year to save seeds so they will be pure. This year I am growing carbons and russian purples that are making nice looking tomatoes , so I think I will only grow them next year. And a couple cherry tomato plants to.
