What on earth causes this?????
I found green tomatoes that were cracked open, right to the seeds. Never saw this before. THe pics are of Great While but saw a few Brandywines as well with this. ?????

Did this happen after it started raining two weeks ago?

A little hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like slug damage. Is that a possibility?

I dont think its slugs, seems like severe cracking that must have occurred when the fruits were very young. Weird. I dont notice it on many other fruits.

Mark, I've gotten a lot of this, I believe it is from to much rain. As, I have not watered my tomatoes. First time for me too, and it's the pits, as I love beautiful fruit.
Oh well, when most of them start ripening more I will just cut out the scars and make sauce. |

I've had similar problems with some of my tomatoes - I think it is the fact that this summer has had stretched of very wet weather and then very dry weather.

I'd say it had something to do with the pollination and developmemnt of the fruit in the wet humid condition.

Worth has it right. Simply too much water in too little time. The plant takes up more water than the fruit can handle, so it just bursts. I have seen this about 400-500 times this year alone.

A big downpour hit our area this year and did the same thing to my pomegranates, ruined every one of them.
