Unknown Potato Leave Black Cherry
Are there any known potoato leave black cherries? The reason I ask is because maybe around 4 or 5 years ago, I received what was labeled as Black Cherry in a round robin. That summer was my first summer getting into starting and saving my own seeds. I did not know all that I know about tomatoes now and what varieties were suppose to look like back then. So I have no idea what the "Black Cherry" looked like when I grew it back then.
Last year, I decided to grow this "Black Cherry" out again and I immediately noticed that it was potato leave. I saved the seed from that to try for this year to see if it remained the same and it did. I do not have the original seed from the round robin to see if the seed was sent to me as a potato leave black cherry or not. So I don't know if this is a cross from my garden from that first year or if the seed was mislabeled and is a different type of black cherry. This black cherry looks almost like a cherry sized cherokee purple. It has a clear epidermis and is potato leave. As with most cherries - it is very prolific. Here is a picture of them. Thanks, Mike |

Mike,
There are some potato leaf segregations of a hybrid 'Purple Haze' (see http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Purple_Haze). Black Cherry was one of Purple Haze parents. I am working on stabilizing a potato leaf selection from one of the lines, which I am calling 'Psamathe' (http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Psamathe).

Tania,
Thanks for the reply. I don't know if this one could be related to the Purple Haze segregations or not. It does appear to be stabilized though (at least the same leaf and fruit type last year and this year). Thanks, Mike |

Mike,
I think you are correct. PL is a recessive trait, and it will consistently show in subsequent generations, so at least the leaf type is stable It is amazing however how similar the fruits are!

Hi I am growing a potato leaf black cherry called Japanese Black Trifele. The tomatoes are quite large - like a small bartlett pear. I wouldn't call them cherry but I guess they are. It's the first time for me and it's so prolific that I have to prune it constantly. I had my first one today and it's quite good. I read that it should not get too much water, so I am unsure of what to do in this extreme heat.

Although it is a PL, Japanese Black Trifele is not a cherry.
http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Japanese_Trifele The only PL black cherry/small saladette I am aware of are Purple Haze F1, or any of its black PL segregations. Also Boar's Hoof (~2 oz), or Clario Purple (~2 oz).

Hi Tania, thanks for the info. I am looking for purple haze seeds. From what I understand it's not easy to get the original. I'll take any type.

I was looking at the leaves on my unknown black cherry last night and now I am wondering if it really is PL or RL. I am having a hard time telling. Can somebody look at these pics and tell me what you think? Now I have myself confused. Thanks so much!
