Goldmans Italian American

I know the story about this tomato being found in Italy and named after Amy Goldmans family store but...

Does anyone know what it was likely to have been called before she gave it her name or does anyone know of another variety that is not squat, is red,deeply ribbed /pleated , pear shaped , heavy at the bottom, grows to about 8 ozs and looks similar to her one.

I've read that GIA was dehybridized - not sure if that's true, but there you go.

Johnny's sells one called Red Pear Piriform that looks similar. There are others that were discussed in a thread a few years back. Try a search on "piriform" and see what comes up.

I grew one like this last year (see photo). It was labeled Cour di Albegnia at a local sale of seedlings. It's not in the tomatobase under any variation, but I think I've seen the name as Cuor d'Albenga. Last year there was a thread about this name and related tomatoes.

I have both Franchi Red Pear, and Cuneo Giant Pear growing side by side, and the Goldman's is a few feet away. The first two look identical to each other to me, and the Goldmans is very very close, especially when they are doubles or megablooms and form that big fat pear shape. Mine are ripening so I'll take pics and try to get each of them in the photo to show you. The Goldmans is still green though.
