Seed saving

I usually pick my tomatoes when they a have a little blush of red and let them ripen in the house or garage, can I save the seeds from these tomatoes, will they produce seedlings next year? Or do the tomatoes whose seeds I want to save have to ripen on the plant in the garden?

http://www.farmerfred.com/tomato.htm Couple paragraphs down.Remember some seeds will carry over diseases,on the seed coat.Fermentation or seed sterilization can prevent this.It depends on the malady i.e.fungas,virus,bacterial diseases.If you have and know the disease check on the seed carryover for that malady if any at all.
