Default The Last Garden Tomato Sandwich

Today is a sad day. I'm sitting down to what will be my last garden tomato sandwich of the year. They have become a breakfast staple these last couple of months.

The recipe has remained unchanged, but the tomatoes have varied throughout the growing season. My criteria is that it has to be large enough to fill the bun with a single, half inch thick slab. I started off early with the Pink Honeys, moved on to Sorrentos, both of which were okay, but a bit on the mild side. I finished up with two new favorites -- Tastywine from the dwarf project, and Virginia Sweets. Both have enough umph to stand up to the other ingredients.

Today's sandwich stars a slab from the last VA Sweet. I do have some Tastywines left, but nothing large enough to fill a bun.

I call it a Tomato Sandwich with the Essence of Bacon -- spread a little reserved bacon fat on both sides of a sandwich bun and grill until lightly toasted. Add a smear of mayo to both halves of the bun, add the tomato slice and enjoy!

I'm almost out of bacon fat anyway, so I'll have the whole winter to replenish the supply in time for next year's tomatoes.

Will be trying some new sandwich worthy tomatoes next year, but would love to hear about anyone else's favorites.

We had our last fresh BLTs last night. No special recipe. I like a sprinkle of hot pepper flakes on my mayo and DH likes a slab of cheese on his toast(we always toast the bread). We used the last Black Krims that were ripened on the counter...not as tasty as earlier in the season, but still better than store-bought. It was the last package of bacon in the freezer(yes, the two of us use the whole package, lol). Since we're getting ready to move back to WA, it will be a long time before we have BLTs again. I'll have to learn how to grow maters all over again there.

Sort like when I was growing up and they used to broadcast The Wizard of Oz only once a year. We made sure we never missed it. Now that I can watch it anytime I want, I have no desire to.

((Exactly)), me too.
We would prance around the house with glee every year when they advertized it to come on.

That's so true about the Wizard of Oz. It was such an EVENT when I was a kid.
My fave BLT has ranch dressing not mayo.

Favorite Tomato? Or favorite tomato sandwich? Or favorite tomatoes for your favorite sandwich?

My favorite tomato for sandwiches is Rutgers. Probably because I grew up on them, and I just got used to Rutgers as a "comfort" food.

Now I do think other varieties are better for various other things. Like eating fresh plain and in recipes, salads, sauces, salsas, stuffed etc etc... depending. But for a tomato sandwich on mayo? Nothing better for me. That's what a tomato sandwich is "supposed" to taste like. It is "supposed" to be a little too juicy and soak into the bread and dribble down your chin. Not too tart, not too sweet but still with full flavor. If it is too small for your buns, buy a smaller bun!

Oh so disapointing to not see your last tomato sandwich, but rather a tease with the wonderful description......

Same here only cherries still growing Sungold, Black Cherry, but what a surprise the cold nights have killed the fungus disease on my surviving plants. Stump of the world plant with only 1 stem has 5 new fruits and my Carbon and Franchi lg pear are loaded with green large fruits. As soon as any color come on these i pick them put in a bag with a banana. After 2-3 days the change then take out for finishing, some take another week. But i got some bacon for more sandwich i hope?

its really coming to an end fast. my raised bed is already cleaned out and covered in manure. my small garden plot is still producing but i can see the end coming.

the taste is going downhill but thats expected and i'm no longer giving away tomatoes, i hoping to get one good tomato a day. the little tomatoes are still doing well but the big boys have really slowed down
