Default Mariyushka - or - Maryushka

I have kept the spelling "Mariyushka" ever since the trade I did with Andrey in 2008. I base this choice on the spelling on the packet I received from Andrey and also on the copies of Andrey's spreadsheets from 2008 and 2009 where he spells it that way - with the extra "i".

However, Tania has the spelling as "Maryushka". It's time to pick one or the other. With her attention to detail, I'm leaning toward Tania's spelling, but the question must be asked.

Which is it to be forever and ever ? MARIYUSHKA OR MARYUSHKA???

I've added "i" to have maximum original Russian spelling with "ь". Maryushka sounds without it.

In English, I would think the phonetic spellings would be:

1. Mariyushka - Mah-ree-yoosh-ka

2. Maryushka - Mahr-yoosh-ka

3. Maryushka - Mah-ree-oosh-ka

So which one of the above is closest to the real Russian pronunciation???

#2 is the correct pronounciation.

Thanks, Marina. That's also how Tania has it in her database. I have now corrected my data to reflect that as well. Man, oh man, how I love this hobby. Or is it a religion???

Ted, I think it is a healthy obsession that we cannot live without

I love it so much, it fills my days both during the growing season and outside of the growing season (research and website updates) - and brings another great meaning to life!

Well, I'll agree with the "obsession" description. Actually, I'm glad it's not a religion. I'm getting too old to do the pilgrimages.

Better to write Mar'yushka or Mariyushka when dealing with Russian " ь" (soft sign). Maryushka is definitely wrong, but you choose

Andrey, I would respectfully disagree (partially)

I have also seen a German spelling of the name, Marjushka. It is also correct.

I'd agree with these alternative spellings:
Marjushka
Maryushka
Mar'yushka

but not 'Mariyshka'.

OK, Mar'yushka
Maryushka is wrong and German spellings are not good enough for English-spoken garden community.

Sorry folks I misspelled the German version - it should be 'Majuschka'

I think all the three alternative spelling are correct - I do not have any preference for one over the others:

Marjuschka
Maryushka
Mar'yushka

And 'Марьюшка' is correct too, of course

Same story with the variety called 'Tanja' - 'Tanya' would also be correct.

Tania, if you are referring to the variety I've sent to Carolyn for her seed offer: It's called "Tatjana". Spelling it "Tatyana" would also be correct? (Rather unusual in German, I must say.) clara

clara, not, I was actually thinking about a cucumber variety called Tanja...

And yes, same would also apply for 'Tatjana' and 'Tatyana' - both are correct spellings. Actually this is how my name should have been spelled, but as I had an opportunity to choose the way I want it to be spelled, I went for 'Tatiana' (as, for some reason, I do not like the letter 'y' as much as I like 'i' in my name - it had nothing to do with the correctness of the spelling - I figured that I had a right to choose my own name )

I see that Andrey has the same preference for 'i'

Recently I have also sent Russian tomato CV with the name Tatyana to Carolyn

This time I prefer "y"

That's true Andrey, but Clara sent me already processed seeds of it to list this year in my seed offer.

Sometimes I get very very frustrated by names, lets take Andrey and Tania and Alex and Dmitry ( just saw him online today), Marina and who am I missing as to Russian speaking/writing folks, b'c one will spell a variety one way and another will spell it another way.

How about Podorak/Podarok for which I've been given several spellings and then Gunnar says he's seen it spelled in more than way here and there and I think he said he thinks either spelling is OK.

I get a variety from someone in another country and it isn't spelled the same as when I look it up at various seed sites ,mainly across the pond, and it's spelled differently. Yes, I do know that the same variety can be spelled differently in German, Russian,Polish, Czech, etc, so what's a girl to do, that girl, ahem, being me.

Go to Google translator and who knows what you'll find.

OK, that's my semi-rant for the day.

Carolyn
