Tycoon
Has anyone grown Tycoon and, if so, what are your impressions? I'm especially interested in opinons of its flavor grown in hot climates. Thanks.

I am also interested. I see you are from Austin, TX, You must have seen them at the Natural Gardener. I know the guy that selects the new varieties for them, and he gave me some seeds. I have one Tycoon plant ready to go into the ground. I thought I would give it a try........

I think Tycoon was the Rodeo tomato a few years ago here in San Antonio. This may sound strange, but I think I planted one or two last year. I put it in a raised bed with a bunch of other heat set determinants like Florida 91 and BHN 602 as insurance in a bed where heirlooms never did well (just found out the soil has nematodes). They all produced the same type of red fruit so I can't comment on it specifically. All the plants produced fairly well and had OK flavor. I ended up giving most of those fruits away and keeping the heirlooms for personal use. I had several "those were the best tomatoes I've ever had" from those red heat-set varieties. As usual, taste is so personal.
I am growing Tygress this year but only two plants. Tygress is the Rodeo tomato for this year. It is resistant to TYLCV so I figured this would be my insurance for my usual insurance plants! I'm not expecting much in the way of flavor, but better than store bought is great if I have some horrible plague wipe out everything else. Best be prepared, I'm thinking. If you have the space, why not plant at least one and see what you think? If anything, Tycoon can be your backup to any heirlooms/OPs you plant. Pheonix is another one I see around here. Also, I think Tygress and Tycoon are related. You might also see BHN 444 or 602 around. Good luck and let us know what you decided to do! Christy |
