Rick's 2014 garden update June 1st
Just a few shots from the garden today. I have been harvesting Early Girl tomatoes, onions, yellow squash, green zucchini and cucumbers so far. It is difficult to see the tomatoes because of all the foliage but I tried to get a few good shots of the tomatoes. I had a bit of the harvest with supper tonight.

Great work, all of your plants look awesome! I can't wait until I am harvesting most of my dinner from the garden. Isn't it the best?

Beautiful! How many gallons do those walmart bags hold? I have a couple root-bound tomatoes in 7 gallon grow bags, and I'm looking for an alternative.

Very nice!
Does your area have any squash plant pests? Your plants look fabulous!

Thanks everyone for the compliments.
Vespertino- They hold no more than 7 gallons, I put about 5 in mine. Kazfam- Yes we have plenty of pest...squash bugs and the much more insidious and evil squash vine borer. I try and be proactive and act as soon as I see any evidence or damage. I will typically walk thru the garden at least twice daily and keep a particular eye out for the tomato hornworms, squash bugs and spider mite damage. Its not if they will show up but when. Rick |

Thanks Justin...we sure have plenty of wind . Its been kind of beating things up in the garden.
mecktom-I use a 60/40 combination of potting mix(sta-green) and compost(available locally for free). I add 13-13-13 fertilizer (this will take them thru about 8 weeks) when I make up the mix. I then add whatever is handy when they need feeding such as Tomato Tone, Miracle Grow, compost tea, liquid fish and the like. Thanks everyone Rick Last edited by ricman; June 7, 2014 at 05:45 PM. |
