Potato leaf heart tomatoes?
In my mystery mater patch I have one large heart shaped tomato. I'm trying to narrow down what it may be. It's heart shaped and has potato leaves. Do any heart varieties come to mind that match this?

Heshpole. Heart (he) shaped (sh) potato (po) leaf (le) is one. There aren't that many potato leafed hearts around. Do you have a list of what you planted?

Here are some threads in which potato-leaved heart varieties have been mentioned:

Thanks Karen and Kath. I checked my list of varieties I planted and only had 1 heart shaped tomato listed Pink Oxheart. It has regular leaves according to the tomato base. My first planting of seedlings got all mixed up when my greenhouse collapsed. That's why I have one garden of mystery maters. I wanted to be able to save seeds so I replanted. None of the new batch has this combo of PL and heart shaped.
I've been trying to cross reference the two lists at TT but thought I'd ask it any one here could point me in the right direction. |

Striped sweetheart is a PL also. They were about 4oz for me with very good sweet/acid balance, and red with green and gold stripes. Very good producer. I really liked them.

Striped sweetheart (despite the name I gave it) is not a true heart shaped variety. Environmental factors can contribute to a heart shaped appearance at times, but it is probably best described as oblate is shape.
As for heart shaped PL, no additional ones come to mind to me other than those already mentioned. All of the heart shaped varieties I have grown have been RL foliage. Lee

Several years ago I made a search for PL heart varieties. I came up with a maximum of 14 possibilities. Several of those no longer seem to be either PL or consistently heart shaped.
I'll try to dig out my old list in a day or so. 2014 was another failed year in trying to locate some of them. Ledeaux Special and Tastiheart are the first ones that come to mind. Striped Sweetheart turned out to be a RL for me, with no fruit yet. Heshpole is the sickest looking plant in my garden. Kardia Karpos is an experimental (not yet stable, and therefore not yet a variety) PL heart that I'm working on. No fruit on this one yet, but all plants are PL. Gary |

Karen, I think Kosovo was one parent in your cross but I can't remember the other one. Save me some time by just sharing that with us so we might be able to understand where the PL comes from. And if I'm wrong about Kosovo, just say so. Carolyn

Ludmilla's pink heart ( from you). X Captain lucky is one of the crosses I made. 5/6 potato leaf plants from the F2 group I have growing have heart shaped tomatoes. 6/7 of the regular leaf group from that same cross also are hearts.

Captain Lucky is PL so is homozygous recessive for PL and Ludmilla is RL and could be either PP for that or heterozygous Pp/ If Ludmilla is homozygous dominant, PP, then all F2's should be RL/ If Ludmilla is Pp then , let me get my pen out, only 1/4th of the F2's should be PL. But you got 5/6 of the F2's that were PL, and that's what confuses me. Ah well, I've been confused before. Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
No, I believe 6/48 were potato leaf. I am growing out 6 potato leaf F2 LPH x CL and also growing out 7 Regular leaf seedlings of that same cross for a total of 13 F2 plants from that cross. Of that group of 13 plants there are: 6 potato leaf seedlings, 5 have heart shaped fruit 7 regular leaf seedlings 6 have heart shaped fruit So seems a strong heart gene in there. also I culled quite a few regular leaf seedlings at the 2-4 leaf stage stage as I was most interested in potato leaf seedlings at the time and I don't have unlimited room to grow them out. About 1/4 of the total seedlings of that cross that germinated were PL which I think is about right statistically. What I think is weird is that so many hearts are showing in both the PL and RL F2 seedlings. Captain lucky must have a heart in his background I think. The other cross I made is delicious x captain lucky. have 10 each regular leaf and potato leaf seedlings of that growing as well. I need a farm. I intend to pick the best of any of them and work on stabilizing one of them from there. but I will likely save seed from everything unless it is a total dud. Some of the Delicious crosses are turning out to be too late for my area already so that makes them duds to me even if they grow nice tomatoes eventually.
