Default Popcorn!

Called Glass Gem. Lots of other colors developing on other plants! This is a discard b/c the stalk was rotten.

In my garden glass gem is not a popcorn. Only about 10% of the kernels pop, and those that do are iffy.

Interesting. How are you drying/storing it?

I'm growing it as a novelty. We'll stick with Orville's white (none of that microwave stuff though!) when we want real popcorn.

I grow about 10 bushels of popcorn per year, so the glass gem was treated the same as any other popcorn: Dried outdoors on canvas until the weather turns rainy/snowy and then brought indoors and monitored periodically until the moisture content is right for popping, and then each cob tested for popping ability.

Is seed for this still as scarce as it was, in years past?

Whenever you visit my grave,

say to yourselves with regret

but also with happiness in your hearts

at the remembrance of my long happy life with you:

"Here lies one who loved us and whom we loved."

No matter how deep my sleep I shall hear you,

and not all the power of death

can keep my spirit

from wagging a grateful tail.

I didn't have any trouble finding it. I purchased from delectationoftomatoes.com.

Last fall I helped a farmer pick an acre field of Glass Gem corn. His seed is currently available in 50 pound bags.

Default Tom Thumb popcorn for Pacific North West ?

Usually I would be a chicken little about cultivating corn in my area and not try it here . ( as we do not actually get a great amount of heat degree growing days ....just a wide band of frost free days ).

Tom Thumb popcorn was billed as able to prosper even in the cloudy pacific north west

and grows only to 3 ft tall !?? well this year it is doing very well ...early.

Anyone have experience with the variety ?

Mischka, I got mine from DoubleHelix, one of our members. Reasonable price, too. Am very much looking forward to seeing these beauties; it is later than my usual corn, and the temperatures have been dropping very close to freezing this past week.

Next year I am planning a plot of Painted Hill sweet corn. Not as pretty as the Glass Gem but more interesting than white or yellow!
