Welcome to Tomatoville, Chris!
Tomato seeds only need to be slightly covered with a soilless medium in order to stay damp enough to germinate- less than 1/4". When potting up, the plants can be planted deeply, covering the stems to the first set of leaves. Some say they don't need to be fed until after getting settled into their permanent spot but others begin very light applications of dilute fertilizer when they have several sets of true leaves. kath |
