My Berkeley Tye Dye Pink taste wonderful but seem to die very fast. Is that normal for the variaty or is this a dieseased bunch of seed?

Not sure it is normal, mine are still going strong at 7 months. I did religious every 7-10 day preventive spraying with a bactericide/ fungicide with BT added , until the 10 week phase, and I stull do a thorough spray every time it rains. Seems to be the magic bullet.

Mine PBTD was done a little earlier than Black Krim which is right next to it last year.... But it was barely hanging there and not very productive for the last 2 months of its cycle.

Having said that, I'm growing two more this year... the taste and the coloring of PBTD is only second to Captain Lucky!

PBTD goes all season for me, productive until the very end of the season and not prone to disease. It's earned a permanent place in my garden...And I've gotta remember to bag/save seed this year!

The flavor was fine, my plants also exhibited more disease earlier than other tomatoes and I did not get as much internal color as some photos. Interesting but not good enough to continue.

I am near your area--. My PBTDs had a rough time of it until I did a soil test and found I was low on potassium--they perked up after that--we'll see how they do this year--I don't think they like the heat and humidity combo. I love them and so am willing to coddle them through the season. They did not die until the frost killed them.

Like many of the black tomatoes they can be quite susceptible to gray mold and if it is allowed to go unchecked it will kill them fairly quickly. Other than that they tend to fall prey to fusarium wilt and RKN like most heirlooms; but if you avoid those three they should last a long season. I graft mine onto a good resistant rootstock and only have to worry about the usual foliage diseases and gray mold. It is one of my favorite fall tomatoes because it ripens so well even as the temperatures get a bit low.
