A New One: GMG Red RL Determinate
Incredibly, another interesting variation has arisen from the saved seeds for GMG that I sent to the USA. I received some back for a large red (edited: thanks Robbins). It’s growing and, get this, is a full-blown determinate, each branch terminating with flower trusses and no growing tip. It’s surrounded by indeterminates of various kinds planted at the same time. They are all 5ft tall. This new GMG Red Determinate is 2-3ft and wider again! Setting flattened oblates with some ribbing. How very interesting. A new compact. This is some season for surprises, eh?
Only downside I can see to this plant thus far is, for whatever reason, it gets the wilts in the hot sun whereas nothing else does. I only hope it's the sun and not something else. I really want these to ripen. Here are some pics. Note the terminating branches. Very excited, yet again. |

I wanted to let you know, I spoke with Neil Lockhart Christmas eve and he really liked GMG! I am going to give it another chance in a better location. Last year was a little late and it lost on the best location.

Thanks Rena.
Does that mean Neil grew it? GMG PL seems to be gaining a fan base out there. I'm so glad it's getting around. I hope Craig gets to grow the real deal this season. Maybe I can organise Bruce to send some across to Craig? |

Grub, Yes I am guessing your GMG is going to be listed in SSE by Neil. When I got your seed I emailed him and asked if he would like some, he responded that he already had it I am on a personal mission to find a tomato "new" to Neil lol. I am thinking I am going to have to come up with my own........as I never happen on them like BULLY.

GMG - red
Grub -
How cool! I'm guessing these are from the seeds I sent you. I don't remember it being determinate - shorter than the Green Giants on one side and GMG-rl-gr on the other, but not determinate. I don't grow determinates in the main field where these were grown, so not a cross. Guess just one more step in the stabalization(sp?) process. I can't wait to hear about the flavor - it was just outstanding for me! Please put me on the list for a few seeds from these! What fun these GMG's are getting to be! And keep those pictures from downunder coming! Robbins How's the grubette doing? It surly must be coming soon. |

Rena, to find a variety new to Neil you have to have sent to you a brand new variety from an independednt source that he hasn't had previous access to.
Which is why I'll be sending him Kroska Pink Bulgarian, Joe's Portuguese and Perito Italian. For years Neil and I have exchanged the best of our new varieties from the previous season. So Neil, if you're reading here, expect those in the mail. I've done the same in the past with Bill Minkey. But everything changed after I fell, and it's hard for me to plant new relatively unknown varieties when I have so many faves that I'd just as soon plant when limited to the less than 15 plants I can now do, with someone else doing all the work. But that's the clue for Neil and Bill both, who both have wide networks for getting new varieties.

Yes, yes, thanks so much Robbins!
These are your seeds. I can't wait. Will save some more. And of course post reports and pics. Grubette is engaged and kicking mum, but we've still got till Feb 22. The pregancy is a lot of fun too. Will post pics.... only joking. This determinate is very very productive. If there is a taste like GMG there we are definitely onto something extraordinary with this determinate, IMHO. |

I hope this turns out as well as GMG. I'm growing GMG again this year, and that says a lot about how it tastes. :-) Because it it can't push something out of my top 10 list, it ain't worth re-growing. LOL.
Please don't name that precious child Grubette! |

Thanks Earl.
I love GMG so much as well. The taste is so different. And now I have a PL plant loading up nicely. This new determinate is v-e-r-y productive. I will keep this post alive in the next few months. If GMG is anything to go by, this will be a late season one. Girls names are so hard, but rest assured Grubette is a working title. |

So Grub, what's going on with this very interesting-sounding determinate?

Grub, you're making me hungry
Grub, I remember reading about GMG on gardenweb and wondering what you were getting. I know if Earl loves it, it must be a winner. I'm always looking for something new to push into my top 10. All the best.

Thanks for all your feedback and I hope GMG PL works for your Craig. I really hope you get what I get. Ditto for my friends Snoozy and Robbins and, yes, I remember Mary in PW. There are several in PW who grow great maters. If you would like seeds for GMG PL just drop me a line...

Not a keeper, a throwback. Strange texture and grassy flavour. Very close to inedible.
Must just be a black sheep in the family Stick with GMG PL, RL or the large red one like Robbins scored. If you ever get the determinate... proceed with caution |

Grub - I decided to carry some plants of GMG PL from seed I saved - will also try to squeeze one into my garden this year, since last year I didn't get a good look at it (or taste).
