Default Extra Pepper Plants to Use ?

I have some extras I'm trying to figure out how to use. Weeks ago, I planted our peppers. I planted 5 Chocolate Cherry Bombs at 18" apart in a row. I have 4 extra plants and was thinking of planting them between and 8 inches further back than ones already planted.

Do you think this would overcrowd them? I've read some about dense planting peppers but have never tried it.

I've read that peppers will do ok if they each have 1 sq. ft. of area, so if you are staggering between the 18" apart spacings and back a bit, they'll probably be fine. I've planted a single row with 12" spacing and plants were normal size. Shading might be a bit of an issue if they're much smaller than the ones already planted and placed "further back" as you say. Be sure to fertilize them as needed and I think they'll be fine...or you could give them away.

Great advice Kath, lol, I dug the holes for putting in the plants and dug up a briar root ball. The soil was just moved to this garden a month or so ago with a tractor and bucket. There's no telling what's under the surface.

You are in Texas! I sincerely doubt shading is a problem. More likely sunscald could be a problem from not planting close enough. BTW I plant mine quite close and staggered like that too. And even add low growing companion plants between that! Peppers like the humidity that comes from transpiration of companion plants.

Redbaron, you are right about growing peppers in my part of Texas. The hottest part of the day is around 5pm. I planted okra 18" on the west side of the peppers just for shading them.

Salt - good choice w/the chocolate cherry bombs. Good flavor, easy to de-seed (they have lots of seeds), yummy w/cream cheese, not really hot. Let us know how YOU fix them.
