what can we do to protect the tomato plants?

how cold? in the 40's or higher? how many plants? a couple? plop buckets over them if they are small enough yet... every night and remove during the day or maybe invest in a roll of row cover and leave it on until it warms up a little more. weight the edges down with heavy rocks, sand bags, cement blocks etc... to keep it from blowing off. or are they in cages already? put shredded paper around them inside of the cage to insulate them..

Yes, How cold is clod ?
We are having lows all the way down to 45F. But mostly around 50F.
Nothing you can do about it. The things will just move at slow speed. It won't bother tomatoes a bit.
And I have planted out in April. Some of my plants are 4 ft tall. June 3- long shot.jpg
