Red Jazz and high flavor red beefsteaks
I am evaluating 5 potential "Red Jazz" lines this coming year, with the hope of releasing one of them. Red Jazz = red beefsteak with yellow stripes.
I want to make sure that I compare them to not only each other, but also to all of the best red beefsteak lines out there (with and without stripes). I have a couple of favorite red beefsteaks I have typically used as "flavor controls" in my field, but I am interested in hearing about what other people consider to be the best red beefsteak tomatoes with regard to flavor. Also, are there any red beefsteaks out there with yellow stripes? I am pretty sure Brandy Stripe and Vintage Wine are both pink -- although on some websites they look red. |

Hey, Fred. The one I use as my gold standard is "Bulgarian Old Sort - No Name". When I don't grow it, then I look to Herman's Special and Mikhalych. They all have that hint of sweetness and lots of old fashioned flavor that leaves a clean and satisfying taste in the mouth. I do have others that I use from time to time, but Bulgarian Old Sort is the best all around.

In my garden, I can count high flavor red beefsteaks on one hand. Roughly 95% of red beefsteak varieties I trial are duds.
Shuntukski Velican and Neves Azorean Red are the two standout varieties. I'm also working on selecting a great tasting PL red beefsteak from Granny's Heart. Gary |

I have grown Bulgarian Old Sort since Freddy used to be a member here and he's from the UK,but spent summers in Bulgaria and sent this one and several others to both Tania and myself. I was not impressed.
http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/B...d_Sort_No_Name Large red beefsteaks that I prefer might include the following, and will always be faves for me. Neves Azorean Red Chapman Couilles de Taureau Ashleigh Red Penna Red Barn Istra, from Slovenia Primorski Pacug, ditto .....to name just a few. And can prioritize them if you would like me to do that. Big Beef is my flavor control, because I think it is the best-tasting hybrid. If an OP variety doesn't taste better than Big Beef, there's no point to me in growing it.
The seeds I got from AKMark, what he calls "Mat-Su" express have blown away everything else I have tried so far this year in regard to flavor. I had some cat-facing, but cat-facing was bad on all my varieties due to cold spring weather. |

By far the best red for me last season was Aker's West Virginia. Very solid tomato close to a pound and juicy. With that old fashioned tomato taste. Will be growing several of this varieties this season in Aug.

The biggest challenge to Red Jazz will be out-doing the original Jazz. That's a tough act to follow.

Can do Fred, and perhaps even adding a few more.
No time so far today with PT, RN, MS demanding an update which always bothers me ,you name it stopping by for this and that. But will do when I can, honest. Carolyn

Goid to hear and I'd be willing to do a small grow out when you get close. Everything your family has bred that I've grown has been outstanding.
