Default Carolyn has been hacked

This morning I got a suspicious email supposedly from Dr Carolyn. I know her email and it wasn't her AOL email. But it was sent to a whole lot of people.

Chances are she has a bot that is sending out to her whole address book. Don't open it or you will end up with the bot too. It's just a line like "you need this" and a couple of links. If you go to the links you WILL regret it.

She had some problems not long ago as well. Somebody needs to install Linux Mint for her. That will cut down on a lot of her virus issue's with the windows os.

Carol I have not been hacked as to my address list and I've been through this before, trust me,once with Tom Galucci that I can remember well.

Look at the other names on the sent list you were sent, there should be many, not just one and that should give you a clue since none of them I would have in my address book. I did that with the one that Tom forwarded to me..

What Mr.Salvage was talking about was the fact that my ISP,not my password, was hacked, huge difference, and it cost me $300 to get it fixed by a Co that does that remotely..

You'll find that long thread in the Off Topic forum.

If others get it,then just delete it, as I have done when in the past I have gotten same, but I don't remember any links being a part of the e-mails.

Where could someone else get my e-mail or anyone elses? If THEY are hacked and have ME in their address book.

Aside from the fact that I have given my em addy with every seed offer I've made here since 2007. And before that at other places and it's the same addy I've used since 1982 when I joined AOL.

I do have three other registered ones, but unlike many others I do not change from one site to another when I post. I do use the same user name, Carolyn 137 or just Carolyn, but that's different.

Carol,I don't know if you know that the folks here decide on what my sign off should be,and vote on it.

they are

75, and still alive
76,and still above 6
77, where I am now, and still not in heaven.

Carolyn, 77 and still not in heaven.

I get these type of e-mails from people every once in a while. I just got one last week from my hair stylist. It was one of those "This is amazing" e-mails with a link and it was supposedly from her.

It probably means that her e-mail account was compromised.

The remedy for this is for the person sending the e-mails to change their password and secret questions. My e-mail account was compromised one time and it started sending out all kinds of spam. I called my internet provider and they had locked it when they saw that hundreds of e-mails were being sent so they helped me to access it and change my password. I had no further problems after that.

My password was hacked just once and AOL knew it and put up a notice to me ASAP on my screen.

They then directed me to suggestions for making a high level password. I did,and they rejected it,said it was low level, try again,I did,and they approved it.

So here's what my current password looks like

*&^%$#@

Yes, I saw the thread where you had computer trouble tho I didn't read the whole thread.

I deleted the email so I can't look at the other names it was sent too. I also got a similar bad email from someone else that may have been a customer. But frankly you should be on something more up-to-date than AOL. I know there were hacked a while back and it's possible this is coming from that hack.

It's still good advice for no one to open something supposedly from Carolyn that isn't an AOL addy.

Carol,let me update you.

When Mischka bought idig I was having trouble accessing it. So my own local computer guy and friend, whom I've known for ages, and M and he have also known each other, decided to switch me to Mozilla.

It wasn't easy,Wayne sat here at my computer and was on the phone with M as they switched things around.

So now I can access both idig and Tville via Mozilla. But in the meantime there was some update, can't remember which one, which allowed me to access more than one Google page, which was a big plus.

I still have problems with accessing one seed vendor, but I don't buy seeds, they just come to me and I source lots of new varieties from many many countries in Europe especially.

My desktop is especially colorful with all the icons for various things that Wayne has installed for me.Wayne is the computer specialist at a local K thru 12 and maintains about 400 computers as well as their server for the school. Actually I inherited him from my brother when I moved here in 1999.

He's superb at Dxing problems and fixing them, but not so good at teaching stuff.

So I'm good to go,oh,one other thing,a couple of years ago Wayne was going to switch me I think to Chrome and one other one,but my faves wouldn't transfer at all,and since I have the max of 2400 in my faves going back to the early 80's I have to keep deleting in order to add new links.

(It's still good advice for no one to open something supposedly from Carolyn that isn't an AOL addy.)

That doesn't help since that addy,as I said above, could be hacked from someone elses address book. That AOL addy has been shown in the list of folks being sent faux stuff. I think you said you never read that list of addys you received, I'm not going to go back now and see where you said that.

Carolyn, 77 and still not in heaven.

..Two very simple precautions....

1). Download and run RKill, as "Alittlesalt" had posted in the other Thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

2). Download and run Malwarebytes, (select the free version):

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/

While you can run these programs in normal mode after downloading and installing, it is best to then restart your computer in "Safe mode" (press the F8 key on power up) and running them again; RKill first, then Malwarebytes.

Raybo, just to amuse you and refresh my memory, here's what's on my desktop.

TeamViewer,so Wayne can take over my computer from his home
Acrobat Viewer
AVG
CCCleaner
Chrome
Mozilla
AOL Spyware

and one called ninite where you can update the following all together at one time, unless it tells you they are already up to date

Firefox
Chrome
Silverlight
Flash
Java
Reader
QuickTime
.Net
Malwarebytes.

I may not personally be looking good these days but the list of stuff on my desktop looks good, and I forgot to copy down the stuff on my left and right toolbars, for even many more.
