hot pepper seeds
was thinking of starting my hot pepper seeds a couple of weeks earlier than the sweet type, because they seem to germinate that much slower, which would be today, only problem is I'm going out of town on the 20th for 10 days, you think they would be alright for 10 days? if I plant them today with heat mats and then turn heat mats off and water them on the 19th, or will they not like the cold of the basement? any thoughts?---tom

Tom, some may sprout in 7 days, others not for 16 or more days, especially if you turn the heat off before you leave. For the ones that sprout before you go, they will need light to grow. If you have low humidity in your house like I do, they may wither in 10 days without watering. My soil is dry as dust within 3-4 days. If you have 50% or better humidity, they might just make it with a good soaking before you leave.
For the ones that sprout while your away, it'll be a gamble if they do not have light available. It might even be better just to sow the seeds right before you leave. My pepper germination so far this year has been 9-16 days. |

I use covered trays so watering isn't a factor.

Hey. What hot peppers are you growing? I just bought some "Trinidad Scorpion Butch T" seeds from these guys. (http://www.superhotpeppers.ca)
No, I'm not that brave. I make hot pepper tea and spray on my fruit and veg to keep the critters away. Good luck with it!
