Earl's Faux looks weird
I have 24 different varieties of tomato plants, all grown from seed, hardened off and ready to plant out. They all look great, except for my one Earl's Faux. The main stem suddenly is growing crooked, and the new growth on top is twisty like a pig's tail. All my plants have been kept in the same conditions. Is this normal for this variety, or is there something wrong. If its some kind of disease, I don't see why only one plant would be affected. Wondering if this could correct itself after planting. I don't want to waste a spot in the garden, even though I was looking forward to trying EF. Thanks.
P.S. Why do my pics always show up sideways? Last edited by george k; May 22, 2018 at 10:24 AM. |

Your Earl's Faux looks somewhat like the growth habit of Mazarini, in my garden. The main stem of Mazarini, often enough, grows downward then upward then downward and back upward. Branches basically want to grow almost straight down. I hope you save it to see what the fruit tastes like, and if the shape is something other than what EF should be.

I wouldn't get too concerned yet, since I've seen pretty much the same symptoms with several different varieties.
And my suggestion is that after transplant out,or even still in plastic cups of some kind that there can be a condition called unbalanced growth where growth of a root system grows faster than the above part of the plant, and the reverse can happen as well. So just let them grow and I'm pretty sure that they'll wise up and grow correctly. Carolyn
