Growing Dr. Carolyn

I plan to grow one of the varieties named after Dr. Carolyn Male next year in remembrance of our "tomato guru".

I grew Dr. Carolyn Pink one year and didn't like it much at the beginning of the season, but later on, it tasted divine! Perhaps it needed more heat to really perform.....

Any recommendations?

I am in fact growing Dr. Carolyn this year and am looking forward to it, especially now.I did also start the pink version but it never germinated, so one to look out for.

Carolyn wasn't all to happy with the name given it.

She discovered it in her garden years ago and sent seeds off for grow out from which they gave it the name.

I've grown Dr. Carolyn several times. I prefer the original over the Pink variant.

It produces loads of ivory white cherry fruits that are not overly sweet, but are very crunchy and are actually excellent for pickling when slightly under-ripe. Green Doctors Frosted is also a great choice, being sweeter and a tad more flavorful than Dr. Carolyn.

Yes, I grow Green Doctors Frosted every year, and have grown the original in the past, but not the pink one.

I’ll grow it next year too. I already have some seeds in my notebook. I’m also going to start Pervaya Lyubov. I received the seeds from one of Carolyn seed offers years ago that I never started. It says 2008 on the envelope, so hopefully I can get one to germinate.

I meant I’ll grow the yellow Dr. Carolyn.

roper, let me know if you have trouble with the Pervaya Lyubov seeds, for sure I have some fresher ones and/or can get them. It is one of Carolyn's finds that turned out to be a real winner for us, and two farmer friends have now grown it many times so the seed is being maintained. Carolyn often expressed disinterest in "early" fruit but she always managed to include some in her offers which could be grown and enjoyed in a short season such as ours. Every tomato I grew from her had some unique features usually an intriguing taste. I have several from her last offer which I could not grow this year, so next season it is!

In times to come, I expect a great lot of tomatoes will be grown in memory of our funny, talented, great tomato mentor Carolyn.

Thanks Bower. If they don’t germinate, I’ll definitely contact you. I’ve been meaning to grow them since 2010.

Mischka, many thanks for your comments. I'm not a big fan of "crunchy" 'maters, so that's really good to know! I think I will get some seeds for Green Doctors Frosted, and grow it along with Dr. Carolyn Pink

I'm growing Green Doctors this year, though I don't know if I have the "frosted" version or not; time will tell. I had just spotted the first buds when I read the news of Carolyn's passing...
