Sudduth Brandywine regular leaf?
Hi growers,
I recently started growing some Sudduth Brandywine i got from Tomatofest and the first few i've planted are all regular leaf. I contacted them and they said they have had the same experience, that they get regular and potato leaf plants from Sudduth Brandywine seeds. I just found it strange that they said this via email but they don't say on their listing that there are regular and potato leaf plants, they only mention potato leaf. Have any experienced growers had the same result? Also, is Tomatofest well regarded in this community? Thanks. |

I have been growing Brandywine Sudduth for many years. It is always potato leaf.

If it’s RL it’s not correct and I would expect a refund or replacement. There is no question it is supposed to be potato leaf.

They grow tomatoes for seed in a large plot where crossing is common. I had seed from them 20 years ago that was a mix of potato leaf and regular leaf for a different variety that was supposed to be PL. On the plus side, many such hybrids are very good tomatoes. On the negative side, if you wanted a Brandywine and didn't get a Brandywine, your taste buds are disappointed.

An average company (for their products/services) is how I'd describe them. Pictures and variety descriptions are very good. Nothing shady, like a few that change variety names, and then say they have the rarest tomatoes on the planet. More than a decade ago, their prices were much higher than the norm. I don't know if it is still that way.

Disappointing that they seemed to have let plants cross pollinate, and more disappointing that they would tell me that they see regular AND potato leaf variants in their Sudduth BW, when they don't mention it on the site, and other people here say it's definitely only potato leaf. |

Sure, of course crossed seed and mixups happen however I would expect a “ non anal retentive” and reputable company to replace incorrect seeds and not tell me that it’s Ok or normal for a very well known Potato leaf variety to suddenly also be regular leaf.
That’s where the problem get serious imo because that is actual fabrication. KarenO |

There is a big chance that the fruit from the Regular Leaf will be different, but you'd need to grow them to find out. Gary Ibsen has been around for years, so I wouldn't expect him to give you crossed seed knowingly.

In the email i said you might want to check the seeds yourself and they replied that they had done and that they also get both regular and potato leaf from these seeds but the fruit is always the same.... very weird situation to me.... was kind of shocked to have that response from them, as on the site it has the seeds labelled as potato leaf with no mention of regualr leaf. |

I'd say at a pinch, that he gets his seed from growers and sells them on, which makes vouching for the quality of the seed a bit difficult.

At some point, they certainly had a bee cross or mix up. It happens in this not so perfect of a world we live in, if you want the PINK, PL Sudduth's you can find it easily. |
