Ripe Green Giant

This is a great tasting tomato, beautiful creamy texture with plenty juice, sweet yet slightly citrusy (light rather than "rich"). I found Cherokee Green equally delicious, perhaps slightly richer, but I couldn't decide which I liked more!

Interesting that when allowed to ripen more than the first one I picked, it had a pink tinge radiating from the blossom end, and it ever so slightly seeped into the flesh. You might be able to see it near the skin edge and feintly at the centre. There are a couple Green Giant pics a few pics earlier in the album which were less ripe.

Patrina,

Aunt Ruby's German Green is another green when ripe that can have a pink blush at the blossom end.

I too prefer Cherokee Green to Green Giant, but I've also said that I didn't think my Green Giant's of last summer had the best growing conditions, so when next I can grow some tomatoes I'm going to take a second look at Green Giant as well as comparing it to Grub's mystery green and I might as well throw Cherokee Green into the bunch as well, for direct comparison sake.

It'll be nice to do a comparison between these and Grub's Mystery Green. My GMG was in a bad spot and I didn't get a decent taste. I had several Moldovan Greens and they were quite nice, good size, prolific, but they definitely didn't have a sophisticated flavour like GG and Cherokee G!

BTW, did either of you notice the absence of seeds on my tomato slices on toast? :wink: It takes a while for me to make sandwiches, or tomato cheese bikkies (crackers) for the family, needless to say!

I'm going to be growing GmG, ARGG, CG and I think Dorothy's as well.
I should have a well practised eye/squeeze for the green when ripes by Fall.

I had no trouble seeing your Yahoo pix. Great pix by the way. With the pink blush, GG looks just like ARGG. I'll be growing both this year.

We LOVE green when ripes here - can't wait to try this one this year. (Thanks, bully.) ARGG and Cherokee Green will be fixtures in the garden, even though I'm cutting way back this year. Hoping to try Grubs MG too, sooner or later.

I'm gonna grow a new Russian green tomato called Boloto (Bog in English). Indeterminate, 150-250 g. Russians said it is rather early (only 95 days after germination to maturity) and sometimes also have pink blushes. Have only some seeds to start in mid March.

When folks ask me about color and flavor I would have to say that Green-when-ripe rank with Pink and Purple. I will always have some of these in my garden.
