RL Polish "C" ?
Hey, hope everyones having a great summer ~
Received in trade 2 packs of Polish C seeds last year from 2 different growers ... Planted 2 seeds from each pack, and ended up with 4 RLs ! Its supposed to be PL ... Its a really nice plant ... Has this happened to anyone else this season? And if so, what did yours look like ? ~ Tom RL Polish "C"

Several years ago I sent out seeds for an RL Polish C as part of a seed offer for about 150 varieties b'c it wasn't available commercially and many folks wanted to try it.
I asked very strongly that no one share those seeds with anyone b'c it was the wrong leaf form. I don't know your seed source so have no idea if these are ones that someone grew from what I sent out and asked that they not be distributed. So I can't tell you what you'll get as in will the fruits really be Polish C. Sorry.

Carolyn,
Thanks for the info & I hope you're feeling better ... Both of the poeple I got them from, got them from OTHER people , and had never grown them out before. I can tell you its a really strong and stocky plant with buds already so you're right: who knows what I'll get in regards to fruit size ... I'm pretty sure, that I can tell that its not going to be a cherry type ... Blossoms are too big ~ Is anyone else growing out Polish C ? PL or RL ??? ~ Tom

Tom,
Is the plant you have pictured from my saved seed? I’ll probably get smacked for posting this, but I’m one of the sources of Tom’s RL Polish C. Seed was saved from an RL plant grown last year from a pack of seeds acquired at Sand Hill Preservation. After realizing this year’s saved seed was yielding both RL and PL seedlings, I called Glen to see if he thought his seed could be crossed. After researching, he responded that the Polish C he carried could yield either PL or RL versions. After communicating his response here, the consensus was that his explanation was incorrect and the seed was most probably crossed. I did a test on saved seed and seed from the original packet received from Sand Hill, and both came up mixed with the majority being PL. I’m not sure what the situation is exactly, but I know that RL plant from last year was something special and the RL Polish C plants I have going this year are obviously out performing the PL version so far. I guess the only thing I can do at this point is continue to save seed from the RL plants yielding the best tasting fruit and call them “Big RIK’s Polish Confusion”. RIK

I’ll post a few pics this weekend. I just haven’t had time to take many this week.
I have distributed seeds to a few people here, but I’m not sure how many are growing them this year or what their results have been. Tom, if you don’t mind, we could turn this thread into a Polish C progress report. Anyone growing any version of Polish C could post pics and results here in the hopes of eventually figuring this dilemma out. (You know what is really strange about my test? I thought RL foliage was the dominant characteristic and I got 2/3 PL foliage out of saved seed and the original packet from Sandhill ) I know I sent seed to: tomstrees, Gimme3, Grub, Papa Vic, amideutch, and a few others who post here. (sorry if I can’t recall your screen name at the moment) Please respond to this thread if you have Polish C growing this year from my saved seed or any other source. RIK

I had some Polish C seed from Sand Hill. I had not grown any out. I think it was from 2005, maybe 2004. The only person I gave any to was Adenn1, I believe. I may be wrong about that but I'm pretty sure that's where they went. Anyway, I sent them out this past fall so if he has any growing this season, maybe he can comment on the leaf type his plants have.

I'm getting a good laugh from this thread as in who sent who the wrong leaf form variety?
As you might suspect I was the original source of PL POlish C to Glenn at Sandhill, as I was for all the varieties in my book, and it was PL when I last saw it. When I did that seed offer I had two vials of Polish C, one RL the other PL, and since at that time no one was offering it and I had compared it favorably with Polish ( Ellis) and the Polish from Heirloom Tomatoes, I decided since I had little PL seed and lots of RL seed to sent out the latter. Whatever.

deutch,
You're right, and that entire list I gave above is for seed I distributed of the BRWS cross I am working on right now. As I said, I may get smacked around a bit for all this, but I'm just trying to learn as I go. Of course I'll make mistakes and maybe no one will want to trade seeds with me after reading this thread. Now that I think back (again), I sent saved Polish C seed to several people I traded with last year as a “freebie”. In other words, if you traded 3 varieties with me I would send 3 in return plus a few Polish C. Not knowing I could have a cross or incorrect leaf type on my hands, I wanted to share the best variety from my garden last year. (Sorry deutch, I guess I left you out) My pologies for the confusion folks. I guess I've got one too many mysteries in the garden this year. Thanks for all who have shown interest and I will continue to grow this RL version of Polish C for myself as it is one of the best overall varieties I have grown in my 3 yrs experience with heirloom/OP tomatoes. For whatever reason (I'm no Geneticist), the RL version appears to hold the stronger genes for production, vigor, and overall performance. For what it's worth... RIK

I got my Polish seed (unknown strain) from a Kathy in NJ last year. I'm pretty sure it was regular leaf, but after starting the last of her seeds, this year's representitive is potato leaf. I'll be interested to see if yield, taste, and form are the same.
