Cherry type, how do you pick yours?

Hi all,

My red husky have started to ripe. For some reason, I kept thinking that I should wait until the whole truss is ripe before picking them, you know, snip the top so that they look like the ones from the supermarket on the vine.

How do you pick yours? Do you just pluck the ripe ones from the vine? Or do you cut the whole vine and let the rest ripe by the window? This is my VERY first ripe tomato and I'm still amazed that I have not picked it yet!

You can start picking them from the first tomatoes on down to the last ones that get ripe.

If you wait until they all get ripe then the ones on the top will go bad on you.

The tomato on the top right and left.will be bad in a couple of days if that far off.

It's rare you get a whole truss that looks like the ones in the pictures. I pick the ones that are ready. Not just red but also a good blush to them.

The grocery store ones are picked green and gassed with ethylene. That's why they're all red at the same time.

Thanks for the advice. Do I just wriggle them until they detach from the vine?

Just pull on them with a slight twist or angle, they will come right off.

For the bigger 3 pound tomatoes I use a chain saw.

Just picked them and tried my very first own home-grown tomatoes! They tasted quite good... tangy with hints of sweetness. I'm hooked!

Now, when will my other non-cherry types ripen...

I too have asked this question in the past. Someone said, tongue in cheek, when you stop looking at them. But of course that's easier said than done. I'd guess going on your cherries within two weeks. As above, post pics of the big day.

I remember reading that quote too. It was funny, but you are right, it's hard not to look. Nowadays, I just walk around to make sure that there are no pests on them and then just leave them be. It's too hot to stick around outside anyways! And the mosquitoes are brutal too!

I'll post some pics in this thread when my others starts to ripen. I'm so excited!

Well, it's starting to happen. The big ones are starting to ripe. In several days, I should get to taste my very first homegrown non-cherry tomatoes!

Better Boy ripening... Not the biggest fruit

Strangely enough, the largest of my Better Boy has yet to begin to show any blush at all.

Big Boy is also ripening... not that 'big'

Celebrity may be ripening soon.
