Interesting post, Grub...... I see you still favor Livingston's Favorite & the REAL Box Car Willie (from Dr. C) among others. Thanks for taking the time to let us know your 'fav's" and GOOD luck!!! I always enjoy hearing what folks "out there" choose to plant.
BEST to you & yours!! LarryD

Hi Larry,
I found some of the original seeds for LF from Rosco. I want to grow it again, near the chicken run, for shade and to use the abundance of good medium reds for cooking. It's a great plant, very strong. The real BCW is another I've planted for production and good taste. But once the pinks kick in then both LF and BCW will probably go in the pot . |

Aussie season
That is quite a list. No wonder us Alaska girls get jealous of your kind of growing season. I am speaking for Sherry here also. Where is the "Sophie's Choice"? I got those seeds from you and it did pretty good here...although still quite green. The size of the fruits are the biggest of any that produced.

Hi Sue,
Well spotted... hard to get anything past you Alaska girls. . I am trying one of Andrey's earlies instead; SC may well be missed. I will be sure to let you know and then you can say: I told you so, Grub. Love the boat in your Avatar, too... Anchorage sounds like my kind of place. |

Aussie 2008
Grub,
Which early from Andrey? I grew out a couple of his this year, Balkonzauber, Arkticheskaya Vishnya, and Pinnochio. All are dwarf and the Balkonzauber did very well, producing plenty of golfball sized tomatoes. I can't tell too much difference at all between the AV and Pinnochio. The boat is a St. Pierre dory, built by my Dad in 1985. He putted around Prince William Sound in it for 20 years until he passed on in 2005. He was getting it ready to go that spring. He was in his early 80's and still enjoyed his boat. It is in good hands now with our carpenter who fell in love with the "Tracy R" (named after my daughter). He now has an Australian boat builder working on it as it had some dry rot and a few other things that concern wooden boats. We can't wait to see her all ship shape again. Thanks for the compliment. Sue,
Uralskiy Ranniy is my early from Andrey. If you have an Aussie shipwright on the job you will get a great result. So glad to hear your dad built the boat, loved it and that it's still going strong. Would you be so kind as to PM a pic of Tracy R, so I can see a bigger version of the lovely dory? I'm sure your dad would be glad. I love the legacy of wooden boats, each a reflection of their builder in some way. Thanks, Grub. |

Cosmic,
You are humble... wonderful list! There are many there I look forward to trying, such as Earl of E. and Herman's, so do report back. And best with the dwarf lottery |

Uralskiy Ranniy is my recent discovery from a lot of Russian early varieties I have. 2 plants are loaded with fruits both in my greenhouse and outside. The flavor is very good for an early tomato variety. Red globe to flattend fruits of 70-100 g...

Righty-o. I'll play, too.
Here's my tomato list for this season: Amish Salad Anna Russian (terrible germination rate. Hope it'll pick up very soon.) Annie Aunt Ginny's Purple Aunt Ruby's German Green Becker's Blau Black Cherry Black Early Black Krim Brandywine Sudduth Broad Ripple Yellow Currant Cherokee Chocolate Cherokee Green Cherokee Purple Cuostralee Debarao Dixie Golden Giant Druzba Earl of Edgecombe Early Pixie Elfie German Gold - zero germination so far. Gogoshary Polosatyi Golden Ponderosa Green Giant Grosse Violette Grub's Mystery Green Grusha Chyornaya Heinz 1370F Herman's Yellow Ida Gold Jaune Flammee Jaune Negib June Pink Kellogg's Breakfast Kotlas Krasnyi Velikan Lemon Boy Mariette Marmande Moldovan Green Mortgage Lifter Pesta Strain Nebraska Wedding Old Timey Yellow Orange Minsk Oregon Spring Paul Robeson Pearly Pink Cherry Peruvian Cherry - zero germination so far. Picket Polar Baby Purple Calabash Red Cloud Regina's Yellow - still no luck with this one. Must be hexed. Rouge de Marmande Silvery Fir Tree Snow White Soldacki Striped Cavern - zero germination so far. Striped Turkish Monastery Sub Arctic Plenty Tasmanian Blushing Yellow TBY Imposter Teardrop Tiger Tom - zero germination so far. Victorian Dwarf Wild Yellow Brandywine There are some new varieties on this list, mainly the ones from Andrey! Thanks Andrey, I'm really looking forward to growing them here and seeing what they'll do at my place. I don't know what it is with Anna Russian. I seem to have a bad batch of seeds. Even though I used my own saved seeds this year. But I always have low or miserable germination with her. And those that germinate are sickly. |

Spatzbear, I see you're growing Elfie again. I really enjoyed it this season. It was probably the best performer in my garden.

I'm glad you like her, too. She was a great performer last season, great tomatoes. How could I not let her back into the patch?

Spatz, my Anna Russians are about to hit the bin - not only very poor germination rates ( set out two lots) but quite a few distorted leaves, fused leaves and generally spindly specimens. I will be junking all remaining seeds and from what I hear other are having similar problems. Might be time to import some better quality ones.
