Okra....plants

Ok Im starting 1/3 of my mater plants this year If it goes well Ill do em all next year....I had a few seed slots after i ran out of mater seeds and didnt want to leave them empty so i broke into my stash of okra seeds in the freezer and put in 10 or so (just to make sure they were still good) my question is has anyone ever started okra and put out okra plants? I always direct sow but dont see why it couldnt be done...let me know

I did that last year with some Burgundy okra, worked just fine for me.

I start mine in regular peat pots then when they pop up I know where to put them. The only thing I don't that in is green beans.

Starting okra in cells has become my preferred way of growing okra. The only time I'd direct sow is if I was going to grow a whole bunch of okra. I'm going to start 2 flats this week.

Two tips -

I've found that soaking okra seed overnight really speeds up the germination time.

When you set them out, try not to disturb the roots.

Thanks yall I cant start all mine like that but a few cant hurt...Im planting 6 100' rows this year...whew maybe ill make it.....

Being a Southern guy and from a restaurant family I had 7 plants last year. Couldn’t even give the stuff away. Sad really. This year I’m going to have only four. People just don’t know how to cook it. What’s bad for me I need to be at home around noon to pick them when they are just right size.

Know what you mean....last year along with 300 mater plants i cut anout 4 bushels of beans and 20 0r 30 pounds of okra every 2 days..not counting squash and about 150 watermelons.. im hoping to double that this year...dont know if im gonna survive..I think im gonna have to get a partner...lol
