First mater came up today! :)

Well it's been a sad winter here. My mother had a number of strokes, lost her ability to walk, and is now in a home. My father fought cancer but unfortunately the treatment is causing heart failure.

Dad phoned me a couple of weeks ago and asked what I was starting this year.......I really hadn't given it a lot of thought but he said it keeps his mind occupied, and talking about it made Mom smile (one of the few things that have accomplished that), so I dug out my mater seed box and found/planted a number of goodies (both from Tomatovillians, thank you

, and TGS). Am pleased to see a Sungold is just breaking soil (so have proved even constantly watched seeds will sprout

.

Dad also purchased a small greenhouse for me and him (when he visits) to putter in so am very excited to see what advantages it will give to us low zoners (who like to grow long season maters). Praying here that this year we won't have another hail storm wipe us out.

Nice job!!! I am thinking watched seeds will not sprout it will be a little over 3 days when I get home tonight and hope to see a few but won't be concerned for a couple more days. We have not had the sunshine the last few days that usually warms the small green house.

Just put mine under the lights and I see 4 are up now. 3 Sungolds and one Ashleigh (thanks retiree

It's always wonderful to see the new starts (and am crossings fingers that the rest of the seeds are just as viable....Dad gave me one older seed package that I'm a little concerned about).

Mirabel,

Your post brought tears to my eyes. My mom has Alzheimers and is starting to fade. She has moments when she doesn't know where she is. She lives with me and it is difficult at times, but I am trying to make her time here with me happy. I just brought a table outside over to the window where she sits and does crafts and put pots of flowers on it for her to look at.

It is wonderful that growing tomatoes is something you can share with both your dad and your mom. He sounds a lot like my grandfather...always a farmer/gardener. Enjoy those special moments!

Corona~Barb my sympathies to you and your mother as well. It's a very difficult time seeing our roles in life become reversed (my mother is also suffering from dementia). You are correct re gardening as both of my parents were avid gardeners from a very early age (and from my childhood I remember them testing their garden soil religiously) so it is very nice to have/share a hobby that brings a sparkle to both of their eyes. I'm glad that you and your mother are also able to share that.
