First tomatoes of the season (PNW)
Weird spring we have this year. It was 8-10F below average all April and early May, and all of the sudden it warmed up significantly, I think now it is 8F above average high, and the nights are really warm.
As a result, I am picking some cukes and tomatoes from my GH at the same time I pick asparagus, radish and lettuce. Very strange, but I am not complaining . These are Anmore Dewdrop, Anmore Treasures, Lyana, Micro Gemma, and Lucky Leprechaun. We'll have a feast tonight. Tania

Hi Tania. I haven't even planted my tomatoes. It's been so cool and rainy. Our cold has been punctuated by days of warmth here and there, but not enough to do much good.
I need to start some lettuces, other leaf crops, put in more onions and some brassicas. Will have to go out and dig in the soil and see if it is compacted very much. Glad to see your tomatoes though. Gives me hope that it might warm up. |

Mary,
I am so sorry to hear about the rainy weather in your area - it has been quite sunny here in May, hardly any rain - I had to water my garden, which is unusual. Here are some lettuces I planted in early April: Crisp Mint (MI FL J): Mary, St Anne's Slow Bolting (MI FL J): Orielle du Diable (MI FL J): Kupusnjara Salata (MI FL J): Little Gem:

Beautiful lettuce and tomatoes.
I recognized the Crisp Mint, by the leaves. I grew it a few years ago. |

Beautiful lettuce pictures Tania. I think I have one or two of them. Will have to check in the seed drawer.

Beautiful lettuce! I love seeing up close pictures of the varieties.
I am just now beginning to realize the many different kinds of lettuce out there. With low plastic tunnels I can have a lettuce season that extends way beyond anything I can do with tomatoes, even when the temps drop to 20F at night. I am now eating my first crop of lettuce that I transplanted under cover on April 15th. Tomatoes have not even been planted out. In fact, I have to hurry and eat up the back half of the lettuce bed, because I need to put seven tomato plants in there in the next few days. Yay for lettuce! |

I hope you can save seeds from that gorgeous looking lettuce Tania!
p.s. the ones you sent to me are sprouting! Ü I'm also looking forward to growing Anmore Dewdrop and Anmore Treasures and now I see a few more to add to my *want* list.

More ripe tomatoes... Not enough to feed us at this point, unfortunately. .

Still waiting in Nanaimo for even one tomato to appear...lots of flowers...I think I may have some tomatoes by December
I have some in pots, some in HEB's, and about 30 in the garden. All seem to be growing so slow and not producing any tomatoes. Been shaking the plants daily and they get lots of sun. Anyone else having a slow year in the PNW? |

Squib,
Slow does not describe the awful year here in Surrey. This will be two in a row in the self described"Best Place on Earth",they should have put in brackets "for slugs and moss." I'm about ready to throw the towel in. If there is no fruit on the plants in another week that's it. No more water, feeding or care.

to temperatures 10F below normal until the last week of June. Last week was ok, 70s (F) and above. This last weekend it went cool and cloudy again, but things are now heating up on a more consistent basis. Many plants have flowers, few have fruit. Hungarian Heart has been a surprisingly good performer in the cold weather, growing as if it were 10-20F warmer than it actually was. (It has the very long petals and droopy leaves of an East European heart, plus a little heart-shaped fruit developing on the first cluster, so it probably is not mere hybrid vigor from a chance cross with an early cherry or something like that. Seeds from a commercial packet, though I don't recall which vendor for sure at the moment. TGS maybe.)

No more water, feeding or care may be an option for me too!
I tried to select plants that would do well in cold weather or were early....Siberian, Manitoba, Belmonte, SubArctic Maxi, Canabec Super, Tiny Tim...and others. So far only my teenny tiinny SFT has 4 baby pea sized tomatoes. I dont even want to tell you how early I started all these. <sigh> |
