I have Hen of the Woods mushrooms, which are spreading in my yard - I had baskets of them last year. Also, two giant puffballs (I wish they would spread more).
I've looked at that morel site, I had morels once and they were amazing! |

Unfortunately, when I said I had morels, I meant that I bought some and ate them, not that they're in my yard. I sure wish they were. I have been thinking about trying one of those kits.

We just happened across some at a farmers market in a small town we were driving through. Bought just a few - they were amazing.
I guess you can get dried ones, I haven't tried those - perhaps by the time you rehydrated them and cooked them, they'd be good. I'll have to try sometime. |

When I was growing up in Illinois, we would go to the woods and pick morels. What a treat! I missed them so much when I moved to California that I ordered the starter kit and set it up in my back yard. Unfortunately, we don't get enough cold weather for success, even though I tried by throwing ice cubes on the pile every day

Okay, time to confess my total ignorance- i have only eaten the white button mushrooms and the same sort with the brown caps- like them a great deal, but what do morels or hen in the woods taste like?

Oh gosh, I don't know how to describe a taste very well.
I guess I'd say they have a stronger, richer flavor perhaps. The morels really soak up whatever you're cooking them in. The hen of the woods are very firm, they have a different texture too. Giant puffball is quite different from either btw - it has a delicate flavor, and is very soft, almost like a cloud. |
