Variation in colors of eggplant blossoms

Part of the fun of growing quite a few different eggplant is noticing how variable varieties are, in terms of stem color, foliage color, and flower color (nevermind the variation in fruit color, shape and size!).

Pretty much all of my eggplant are now flowering, and for the second year, there are some varieties with white flowers. Last year, Green Finger Striped, Indonesian Pink Blush, and Striped Nigerian; this year, Turkish Orange and Indonesian White Ridged.

This year I notice that there are different depths of violet, some flowers are nearly double or ruffled, and some are pale, nearly pink.

Just one of those things that I am appreciating this year - will post some pics once I get good shots of the flowers and load them into my website.

Good thread. I'll take pictures of the blossoms on my plants too to compare regional variations of color.

Last year I grew a few Louisiana Long Green plants, all from the same seed packet, and half had pale purple blossoms and the other half had white flowers. All the fruit was the same. Interesting.

I’m only growing 3 varieties so not much color variation here. Three plants give the two of us far more eggplant than we can possibly eat, even doing things like baba ganouj for parties or just snacking. I’ve been experimenting with some to try to emulate the best Thai eggplant recipe I’ve ever had from a restaurant in San Francisco. I've wasted quite a few that way . I need to go back for another tasting and to pump the staff for the secret.

Craig, how are you getting such fantastic photos of eggplant blossoms? I found I've had to practically crawl under the plants, then inevitably, something happens, like a breeze, when I click the shutter.

Anyway, I'm ready to throw in the towel on this project. Here's what I have. The most interesting to me is Rosita (#5) because of the spines on the back of the blossom. At least this has been a good lesson in close observation.

Only growing one Eggplant this year. Hope our 'heatwave' returns for this one to set fruit.
