Mid-West Tomato Fest 2010

This year's Fest attendance was down a bit (25) the tomato varieties about the same as usual (53) and the fun and fellowship was as good as it has ever been. There were several "old hands", and lots of new tomato growers and tasters. For getting together only once a year for a few hours, an observer would guess we were having a family reunion. And I think we were.

As for favorite selections this year, tasters were charged with choosing their top three tomatoes. Twenty-three varieties were named by the twenty-five voters.

The winners were:

1st Black From Tula
2nd Black Cherry
3rd (tie)
Orange Russian 117
4th of July
Cherokee Purple
Arkansas Traveller

Thank you Paul for the camera work. A little windy, warm and humid but that doesn't make a difference for true tomato lovers. The first photo of Paul's is Old German - they were absolutely beautiful and very good. Most in the area are reporting huge crops on old german this year. Wonderful to see old friends and meet new tomato lovers - like Paul said, a family reunion but we were missing Mr. Tudball and family. A photographer and reporter from the newspaper stayed for the entire event so we will see what appears in tomorrow's paper. Hopefully not my face! The reporter loves store bought tomatoes so we made her sample alot but she did pick one that was close to tasting store bought as her favorite!

Thank you to John for the wonderful sign and Mike for the large tables.

The worst tasting: Raad Red, and I think Pruden's Purple, there were a number of others that were real spitters. Once the lycopene high passes, I will post again. Piegirl
