Is Melrose a sweet frying pepper? Looks yummy...add some chopped tomatoes and garlic and good semolina bread and it's a meal! ...can you tell it's getting close to lunchtime?

yes, I can certainly tell it's getting close to lunchtime! Well... when I looked at my own pictures, I felt I must be now very close to the breakfast time

Melrose is a very sweet frying pepper - we also like it fresh, as it is so good in a salad. It is a very productive pepper, loaded with fruits, and one of the earliest to turn color. This year was a bust, and therefore the peppers just recently started to turn - normally I'd be eating ripe Melrose at the end of July.

Simone - thank you, they taste great I only got a bundle this year, so each fruit is a great treasure for me, both the seed and the flesh.

Mark, I too never heard of the Alice tomato until I received seeds from my friend Cathy, who bought it from Two Wings Farm. I did not know what to expect, and I am so glad it turned out to be a winner!

So you've got two varieties with Alice in the name so how about three and you can grow out Alice Roosevelt, I mean the tomato, not the daughter of her father the Prez and she was a spitfire when it came to, ahem, behavioral activities.

So I decided at the lastminute to check to see if you had Alice Roosevelt listed, and you do, and Marianne Jones has been offering it and since I know she gets almost all of her varieties via the SSE YEarbooks there's a good chance she got it from the 1995 YEarbook where Craig and I first co listed it, seeds from the USDA with an NSL number.

Yes, about the same as Earliana and the other 100 synonyms given for Earliana in the Michigan Bulletin. You laugh, and maybe I embellish a bit, but surely at least 25 synonyms b/c way back then there was fierce competition and it was common to change the name of a variety to indicate that a particular seed company had something unique.

And then there's King George, the tomato variety, as well as Queen Mary, so it looks like we've got most of the "royals" of that time covered, and yes, Craig and I also grew out George and Many, as it were.

Carolyn, I am sure my two Alices are better than Alice Roosevelt (tomato that is ) - as both turned out to be red hearts, and somehow I am getting to think that red hearts are better than pink hearts, maybe because this year my measly tomato harvest brought me a few excellent red heart fruits?

I never had so few tomatoes from my garden, not even in the year when I only grew 3 plants I think. <Sigh>. If it were not for Jeannine's four dwarf plants, that are producing half of the total tomato harvest, I would not be able to get enough fruit for a decent salad.
