Those are fighting words on the okra slime as I've learned the hard way, but I'm with you on that. And when I say that someone will say have you tried them fried, have you tried them this way or that way and aren't the blossoms beautiful, etc. I stand pat but would certainly eat some excellent Cajun Gumbo given the chance.

I e-mailed Adam last night so should hear back soon on where he's at with uploading new varieties for 2012. I remember that last year it wasn't until about mid Dec when I looked at my older saved e-mails.

I also got an e-mail from Ken at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange telling me he was putting one of their 2012 catalogs in the mail I think today, so those should be out soon. The reason that I think he's doing this is b'c I noticed that several varieties I'd sent to Jeff McCormack when he owned SESE had had their names changed and when I saw those wrong names at other sites I got concerned and told him about it. It was also Ken who told me my book was out of print when he tried to buy more for SESE. Workman Press had told me nothing.

Ken explained what changes they made to go back to the variety names I had originally sent in all those years ago and they must have been good ones since they still list them.

I already listed what I've received to date, not that much, but also got Millers from W NYS where in the past I ordered lots of stuff as to strawberries, fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, blueberries, etc., all excellent stock, and I can't get over the price of lilacs these days. Many that I got and planted are still at the old farm unless that's been torn down and I don't know about it. But I have to tell you that the most fragrant lilacs were the simple lavender and white ones that were planted around the barns and along the long driveway to the farmhouse. Some of those were probably 20 ft tall and were either planted by my grandmother or by the Shakers, from whom my grandfather bought the land back in 1905. I ordered new ones for here where I now live but the deer love to eat the blossoms and the bushes are still quite small, but there is ONE older lavender one here that was planted by the folks who had the house built back in 1978.

As an aside, I've found that Johnny's, Stokes and Territorial have had the best cultural information in their catalogs and often mention that to folks who want to buy books as a cheaper alternative.

When I moved into my present house a few years ago, I was outside & smelled the strongest lilac smell that I had ever smelled. I hunted & hunted (we only have 1 acre). I couldn't find a lilac bush that the smell came from. A couple of days later I looked up to see where the sun was to guage the time. White lilacs about 30 feet in the air! There were no flowers below the 25' mark! I have no idea what variety it is or how long it has been there - but wow! The smell... Carolyn... you wouldn't believe it!

Got my SSE catalog yesterday. Was a little disappointed that it is about 98% identical to last years version.

I said in a post above that I would contact Adam Gleckler to see where things were at as to updating his webpage. His wife Ellie, who takes incoming e-mails, emed me back ASAP and said that Adam was still doing concrete, which is the larger family business, but would get back to me.

And he called me about an hour ago and said he hoped to have the website updated by the end of this week and there will be about 20 new varieties.

I also mentioned in the same post above that Ken at SASE was sending me a catalog and it came and I was pleased to find that the prices were lower and that the offerings for lots of veggies and fruits is just plain huge. The garlic section was quite a listing.

he'd sent it to me to show me that they'd gone back to the original name for a pepper that I'd sent to Jeff McCormack many years ago, and had somehow morphed into something else. The variety is Joe's Round, and a great hot pepper. I sent Joe's Long to Johnny's and they determined it was a cayenne and a good one and last year I saw that SSE had listed both; I didn't check the 2012 catalog, which I also have.

There was another hot pepper I sent to SASE called Royal Black, or was it Bellengrath Gardens, maybe both and again I didn't check to see if both were there, and it reminded me that I used to grow a lot of peppers, both hot and cold, but the crossing rate with peppers is so high that one really needs to use isolation cages, which is why I continued only with the tomatoes.

I've known Linda since about 1991 and consider her a good friend and have been sending her the best of my best each season for many years, as I do for Glenn at Sandhill Preservation, and more recently to Mike at Victory Seeds and Adam at Glecklers/ I used to send to others in the past such as Johnny's, Pinetree and a few others but don't anymore. And of course I'm still listing my newest ones for which I have seed in the SSE YEarbook and for the ones that I have enough seed also here in my annual seed offer and that includes some that I don't have enough seeds to SSE list.


So look for the 2012 TGS catalog in the next few weeks. I forgot to ask if the new ones are up at the website and if not when they would be. We talked for almost an hour, you know, tomato gossip and the like.

Got my Baker Creek on Sat. My wife said it looks like pornography for farmer's.. It is a very colorful catalog isn't it? with all those luscious full page spreads of veggies...mmm

Don't know why, but I got two Baker Creek catalogs. Good thing as I love it
and so does my wife so we each have one. I love the 'maters and she loves
all that leafy stuff you put under a tomato in a salad or sandwich.
