LOL - awww!! Good point, really. I don't hear folks telling weather jokes when it's cold and rainy outside here. Sometimes I do hear eskimo jokes, though, in the dead of winter. I personally love having a "real" winter but lotsa folks 'round here don't. I can understand how it would be difficult to have that most of the time.

NYC is also undergoing a super-hot spell. Today it is not as humid. It's so hot I've had to water the "self watering" containers every single day! Something wrong there, eh? (No such thing as "self watering container.") Yesterday all my guests voted to eat the BBQ inside rather than outside. How about, My self-watering container was so hot it watered itself .... with its own sweat! (Actually, MY sweat...!)

I remember a comic in the Seattle paper one day. A tourist with an umbrella and raincoat asked "When is summer around here?"

A resident in shorts and a t-shirt answered, "Last year, I think it was on a Thursday."

We had our first all-day sunny day this summer yesterday. Got all the way up to 67F. I'm just wiping the sweat off my brow! Seriously!

My tomatoes grew 2 inches yesterday!!!!

The first year I lived here, we had a heat wave in Seattle where it hit 100º for about 2-3 days. Emergency shelters were set up, because people here aren't used to any heat at all. Since I had just moved from HHH (hazy, hot, humid) New England, I found it warm but still comfortable, since the humidity was around 15%.

I've acclimated. Anything over 75F makes me faint.

Yup, I was there; it was hard to even move around. And we didn't have air conditioning, because, who needs it in Seattle, its always cold and rainy, right?

Now that I live on the opposite side of the State, I have to deal with temps in the 100-110 range occasionally, but at least the humidity isn't a factor.

Sorry to hear all the sad stories of failing plants and hot and humid weather. I'm in downtown Houston where 90-95 temps and 80-90% humidity are a predictable 3 to 5 month event. I've learned how to grow healthy, strong plants in my containers, but constantly battle lack of blossom set.

Any tips, suggestions, etc. would be appreciated.

Oh I know we sound like a bunch of whiners !!!

But you live where this kind of weather is more or less expected.

For many of us it's been years since we've had this kind of weather.

Most years where I live in Wisconsin, we MAY get 6 - 9 days of 90s in a whole summer. We've had more than that already this year. It's been 13 years since Milwaukee hit 100. Now 2 days in a row I think (at least it hit 100 here in West Bend 2 days)

Nope, I live where the summers have been warm and dry, the winters colder, the spring and fall drier, and the weather more 'reliable' is the only way to put it.

We often used to have lots more sun in the spring and fall, and we've been below average temps in the spring, summer and fall for the last 3 years. 10º type of below average.

This year takes the cake, so far. I really wasn't too far off kidding when I said y'all got our warmth. Really, I think it's true. The USDA dropped us from 8a to 7b. Baby, it's cold out here lately!

Lots more tourists here in the last 3 summers, too! Come on down!

Yes and I agree - I fear we may sound like a bunch of whiners but that's certainly not the intention. I know we all have our challenges -- some of them expected and some of them unexpected (too hot! too cold!). Helps to talk about it though and find out what others may be doing, especially when you're inexperienced (either because you're a newbie to growing toms, such as I am, or because the weather you're experiencing is unusual for you). Seems that is one of the many reasons we're here...the fellowship of like-minded individiuals and the benefit of learning from others, etc.

It's supposed to be 102 here on Saturday. Eek! But at least the power's back on.

I've been going to the garden at 8:00 pm to water. It seems happy, though -- everything's very green and lush. The weeds are a little out of hand because I don't feel like dealing with them.

Monday the high is supposed to be 86. Can't wait!
