My Skykomish got a late start so I am growing them inside my makeshift greenhouse. So far so good (I have no heat) I am getting a few ripe ones and really enjoying them. Good flavor. I am having some cracking issues and cant really figure out the reason. Water is consistent. Maybe temperature swings?
Anyway really enjoying these this time of year here in WI. Hoping my Green Zebra's and Little Lucky's make it.

Some of the segregants of Grungy in the Sky, which has Skykomish in it's parentage, that I grew this year had cracking issues. They were quite a bit smaller fruits than your Skykomish.

This is a photo of a SKYKOMISH tomato that I picked from plants grown out in Portland, OR. There was very little cracking at that location. I had many at 4 inch diameters.

GRUNGY IN THE SKY was sent out to a few folks as F-2 seed. The segregation would likely be 3/4 cracking 1/4 crack resistant. The cross was between SKYKOMISH and a variety Grungy of BC sent me a few years before she passed away.

I had the seed from the photographed tomato of SKYKOMISH sown today in a tropical area for single seed descent increase. I have several locations in the tropics growing out unique Skykomish hybrids....and one hybrid is only one quarter Skykomish...the F-1 of Roman Skies X Green Brandy. I will evaluate the cross for uniformity but since the respective lines will still segregate a bit...I am hoping to get a "take" with the late blight genes intact for further breeding.

Thanks for the post Tom. I am thinking the cracking is something going on with my micro-climate in the greenhouse. Doesnt really bother me much as these are VERY tasty!!!

Yes, that's about what I got. Four with varying degrees of cracking, one with no cracking. The one with no cracking matured later than the ones that cracked. It also had what I considered the best flavor.

Excellent! I bet Valerie (Grungy) McMurray would be proud. She has been gone for what...2 1/2 years?

If you can spare a seed or two of the one without cracking...I could continue to grow it out and keep the name GRUNGY IN THE SKY for this preferred clone. If it doesn't carry the two genes for blight resistance in the segregations...I will have to cross it back to SKYKOMISH.

A selection made in Iowa sent back to Washington might force me to find an earlier selection of it before it looses all heterogeneity!

Tom, your tomato Skykomish, thats a beauty. Your test garden must be an awsome site to behold. You must have thousands of varieties that have not been released yet.

Not really sure what the early cracking was about but it has stopped.
I do like this tomato and will be planting a block in my tomato garden next summer and I hope to get many so I can take them to market.

On a side note it is really fun to be getting toms in December in WI. My first try at an unheated greenhouse just to see how long it can last...but boy do they ripen slow.
