Tomato Grafting Attempts - Page 2

I've been using piece of a coffee straw with a vertical slit. The stems are a little bit bigger diameter so when I slid it on it kind of springs tight around the stem. The only problem is I cant tell for sure if its lined up properly. Don't ask me if it works, I just tried it last night.

I'm thinking about making the graft cuts horizontal instead? Would it heal OK? That way I wouldn't have to guess if the cuts were properly aligned.

Im to cheap to buy the proper clips, and anyway, they wouldnt get here in time. My rootstocks are growing too fast and my heirloom scions falling behind. I may have to start over.

FYI, The coffee straw idea didnt work very well. Only 2 seem to have taken out of six.

I got a free sample in the mail from graftingclips.com So far they seem to work great! Easy!

Did the sample package they sent you come from Israel? How many did they send?
Any other info come with it?
I was looking at their website and they don't actually sell anything. No contact information, no order forms, nothing. They will apparently send you sample clips if you supply your contact info.

Yes. The package came from Israel. My kids were fascinated with the stamps. There were three different sizes with about 100 of each. More than I needed. I felt a bit guilty asking for a free sample and getting more than I needed or expected. They are soft silicone and they have a little constriction "rib" at each end that seems to grip the stem good and tight just above and below the graft union. Also each clip has a little looP if you feel it needs a small stake. They are so pliable I'm sure the natural growth will just open up the slit and it will fall off naturally.
All in all I'm pretty impressed with gradingclips.com.

As I mentioned I just found it odd that they will send you some for free, but you can't buy them. Not the best business model! LOL

Go to a hobby shop and buy silicon fuel line for model airplane/boat/car use. It comes in different sizes.

I experimented with taking a short (3/8"?) piece of aquarium tube and then cutting in in half lengthwise. Then i confiscated these tiny little wood clothes pins from my wife, and superglued the halves to each end of the clothespin, forming a little clamp with soft silicone jaws. This actually worked pretty well, especially when I was playing with approach grafting. The weight of the clothespin was a bit awkward though, ended uP wiring them to a bamboo cooking skewer. The grafting clips from graftingcliPs.com made everything much easier.

I hate to see everybody going through such a hard time trying to make grafting clips when Hydro-Gardens has them for a reasonable price. I can't see not using a nickle grafting clip when you are spending money on expensive rootstock seed. Just be sure to ask to have them shipped by mail because it is much cheaper and it only takes a day or two longer.

I grafted these last Sunday. I only removed the humidity dome to take this photo. They were under complete darkness for two days, then under an opaque cover for two days and now under the clear with the humidity dome cracked open about 25%. I'm going to be going to a conference until Sunday and my hope is to open the humidity vents on Sunday night and remove it completely on Tuesday or Wednesday. Is there anything wrong with that plan?

I'm hopeful that, since they are not dead yet, that they might live. Also, I realize that the graft is close to the soil level on the foremost plant. I will fix that when they come out of the dome.
