I strongly disagree: Green Zebra and Green Grape are really nice.

Stupice is blahhhh and Tommy Toe is ordinary, as is Pasture... but you can do things with them like roast for 5hrs and bring out the sugars

This is a great thread. I have seen spitters here that I plan to grow every year LOL.
But truly , Early Wonder , avoid , even throw the seed packet in the trash.
Stupice, I didn't like at all. But a lot of people do. Different tastes eh.
I prefer sweeter tasting tommys and Stupice for me was the opposite.
For cherry types, I now agree that Tommy Toe is ordinary, Resiontratbe, (I know I spelt that wrong), on the other hand is a winner. Too many beers. Late here eh.

Somebody over at Gardenweb was a real fanboy of Early Wonder a few years ago. Started a flavor-of-the-month Early Wonder craze. Everybody grew it the next year.

I don't think anyone ever liked it other than that person??!

when did you grow Moskvich? (Everything in New York State was crunchy and flavorless last year, hehhehheh.)

I ask because barkeater loves Moskvich, and he's just over in Vermont.

This whole tomato thing is just TOO confusing.........

I didn't grow Moskvich last year, it was probably 5 or 6 years ago. I had 3 plants each of Moskvich and Stupice growing next to each other. All of the Stupice tasted great and all of the Moskvich were terrible.

Close but not completely true Gregg, at least for me.

Granted I only had about 15 plants which is all I can grow now, but Mama Leone was superb, as was Sara's Galapagos and I got quite a few nice KBX (PL Kellogg's Breakfast), and gee, I'd have to go look at my list to see which other ones did just fine. Ah yes, Kimberly did fine as well.

I'm also in the group that does not like Green Zebra , but I do like Green Grape and of all the green when ripes I've ever grown, and that includes maybe 15 different ones including Green Giant but I haven't yet grown Grub's Mystery Green, the total standout for me re taste and production is Cherokee Green, hands down.

Green Zebra has had good flavor for me until this year. I didn't get to taste one this year due to some strange wilt disease that only affected GZ (please see my Green Zebra post in the Disease Forum).

I am going to try Big Zebra this year. Any opinions of it?

Moskvich was terribly hard and had no taste here.

These I thought were unpleasant:
Green Zebra
Isis Candy
Yellow Pear

There is a large group that are okay and in some years might be better or worse, but they're not what I would call spitters. Pruden's Purple, Aker's West Virginia, Kellogg's Breakfast, and Azoychka are examples.

Some tomato plants just don't do well for me when every other one in the garden is healthy as can be. Cherokee Purple is one. I grew it for three years (two locations) and the plants were very unhealthy. Really would like to get this one to work.

Yellow Pear and Early Girl and Juliet F1 - yuck!
Also, unripe Green Grape is quite horrible, but a fully ripe one is very good.

Isis Candy was so unremarkable at the beginning of the season, but became so delicious and super sweet towards the end of summer in 2006.

This thread reminds me of the "Americans" episode of the classic British TV sitcom "Fawlty Towers."

At first, the American guy is the only one who dares criticize Basil Fawlty. But as soon as he does, the others collapse, and share their complaints about Fawlty Towers, as well.

So is Kellogg's Breakfast Fawlty Towers or Basil?! Some people may still like it, but it appears to be the most over-hyped variety ever. (Or is that Marianna's Peace?!)

Ugh. The first one that came to mind for me was Green Zebra. I didn't expect it to be great, but still...it just tasted bad.

Taste really is a personal thing though. I have found that I am not crazy about black types. I was even disappointed with the taste of Cherokee Purple which surprised me, given how many people love it. I tried CP's at T'palooza, too, so it wasn't just my growing conditions. Most black types just taste odd to me.I WANT to like them, but I don't.

Heh heh, I remember that. I tried it in part because of that recommendation and thought it was pretty bland. It wasn't that early either. Not the worst one I've ever grown though -- that would probably be BHN 444.

Part of might be going on is that EW is supposed to be a red. But everywhere I see seeds for sale, it is listed as a pink. I found that out later, after growing it. So maybe some of us really didn't grow the real EW.

And I think the possibly faux EW I grew was a little better than Taxi, but then Taxi actually is very early.

Black Plum (taste and texture made you want to gag)

Persimmon (got 2..count em TWO tomato off of the entire plant!)

Roma (Just lump all paste in with that since I haven't found one that liked the weather here in h***.)

Creole (puts out great but not worth the effort or the time)
