Janie, What zone are you in? I have heat and humidity and am interested in plants that keep going in the Summer.

BBJM, I think my zone is 8-9. We get lots of dry heat, typically mid-ninetys all summer. We have cools nights, however. It's rarely above the mid-sixties at night. I think you should try Kosovo. It's a terrific variety! I picked my first 3 this morning, and looking forward to cutting them open! BLT'S, YEAH!

materlvr,
Do you let Kosovo get absolutely soft ripe before cutting it open? Just curious. |

Feldon, I think I picked them a little early. They're pink but have still have a tiny bit of yellow on them. I don't like to wait too long, because I don't like soft tomatoes. I think I should wait a day or two, though. What do you think?

Janie,
A suggestion, if you do not mind: when a particular plant like your Kosovo is going great guns, not a bad idea to bag and collect seeds from your special individual. Also, given that you are in a mild area, I personally would have been tempted to have taken stem tip cuttings of that plant, and tried again next year. Sometimes, an exceptional cropper is exhibiting phenotypic plasticity but maybe there is also something special about that one plant. I have seen this in one Marianna's Peace i had, and very bitterly regret the circumstances that prevented me from preserving some vegetative clones of that very special individual. Don't mind my 2 cents. mouse |

Mouse, I'm planning on saving seed with my next ripe one. I had my first tomato last night and, man, was it good!

Does anyone over winter a plant from a cutting. I would like to try this since if you find a really great plant a clone would mean (perhaps) great plant next year. I grow my toms too close to save seed with any sure hope of non cross polination.
Thanks, Tim |

The top five this year for me have been
1. County Agent This plant was just loaded with fruit and still has and is making more fruit and flowers. So far I have picked about 10 and there at least another 20 on the plant The taste is about 8.5 out of 10 but they are big fruit, tart, good on sandwich and there are a lot of them. 2. Creole less fruit production than county agent and smaller, but much tastier and almost no blossom drop in our hot climate. I give this one a 9.5 of ten for flavor and it will be back again. 3. Khurma about the same production as creole and taste is just as good. Got about +20 on one plant. 4. Pink Potato Top On this list only for flavor not production. The mere 3 fruits I got from 4 plants were some the of the best tasting fruits I have ever had I give and 11+ out of ten. Nice and tart best fruit so far and one of the biggest with fruits over 1 pound, although that may get changed when my fall plantings start producing fruit. 5.Market mircale Truly a market mircale. Great taste and good production although not as good as the other top 3 still very good in both catagories. |

Earl's Faux is excellent as expected. The surprise so far is Mortgage Lifter which is almost as good as Earl's. They have always had good taste when I grew them but this year the texture is excellent, too.

So far it goes something like this.
Carbon is the best in two catagories so far. Best overall Carbon. Good number of fruit and the look on the faces of everyone I've seed try it this year give this one a solid ranking of 8.5 Best "black" variety is Carbon. This year Carbon is up against Gary O'Sena. Gary O' Sena has given me bigger tomatoes and the taste has not been disappointing but Carbon explodes with flavor. I don't have a Cherokee Purple in the garden this year but a friend does and I really want to taste CP and Carbon at the same time. Kalmans Hungarian Pink has just been wonderful. The taste is sweet and I like the looks of the plant with ripe fruit on it. Andrew Ruhart's Jumbo Red has returned to the garden. It was one of the first heirlooms I grew and it has really earned a permenant spot. Meaty and just tatse great WOW. Big Beef is a great tomato. I've read a lot of praise on it but always grew Better Boy and Celebrity. It's not a big tomato but it taste great and has steadily been given me fruit. Sungold - WOW on taste and production. Tim

I really liked Kalman's Hungarian Pink at the SETTFest. If it's productive, I'm gonna grow it.

I liked Black Cherry and Riesentraube so well I don’t think I will ever grow another Sungold.
Production is just fantastic and the flavor is great too. Worth |

Not ever grow Sungold again?
Worth you've spent too much time in the cold. Riesentraube is one I need to try. I've had some seed for 3 years now and still haven't grew it. I think the biggest reason for not growing it is that I can't spell Riesentraube from memory. Feldon, Kalmans Hungarian Pink is a tomato machine. It has lots of fruit. Tim
