Is that perlite you are using for media for the lettuce?

Thanks! My first attempt at hydroponic lettuce grown in perlite alone. I was lucky to have some very hearty seeds from Andriy, so Siberian lettuce likes to grow everywhere.

They went through a strong heat wave, high 90s extremely dry conditions, and came out unscathed.

I just ordered some more lettuce from High Mowing to double down for the winter crops.

Lots of Kuroda and Tonda de Parigi carrots sown recently too. The tubes will be hard at work.

I have to say, subirrigated plants sure seems to dig the osmocote slow release.

I have good luck letting my container plants sit in bins of water way too long, when I get too lazy to move them around. They can sit in water a couple of days and be fine. Maybe the Osmocote I am using has something to do with that.

I like Osmocote. I had to buy some Shultz brand when I ran out re-potting mums:

The Schultz mums did ok. I have not tested it on other plants yet. It did make one pan of water go dead-animal stinky, but that only happened once. It's still probably not the best choice for a sub-irrigated planter.

I can verify that sweet potatoes grow very well on the gutters. This is a picture of the ones I harvested yesterday. Some are nearly 2 pounds. The deeper color ones were from some purple sweet potatoes I purchased while in Florida. They sprouted, so I grew out the slips. This year I grew them in 10 gallon grow bags, because last year they were so wedged in the pails I had trouble getting them out. This worked much better.

I have to ask.

You grow all your crops in Mexico.You grow lots of stuff, more than your family can ever use for food.

Yes, I know you eat a lot of tomatoes and do other stuff with them, but what about lettuce and other greens which one does not can or freeze, etc.

Do you fill the car with really perishable stuff and drive it up to San Diego to your relatives there?

Do you sell stuff where you are?

simple answer, my Guineas are the BENEFICIARIES. I'm sure they'd taste great, alas I'm not in south America, and they are my pets, so they're safe. Very well fed.

Just trying to keep up with what you are doing/planning to do,but losing traction on that.

Not selling, give away to a huge extended family.
