Default Amonium Nitrate...

I have about 25 pounds of ammonium nitrate left over after getting my strawbale portion of my garden done. I have never used this chemical before and am wondering what would be the best use for the excess around the garden, or what plants would benefit most form it. And how much should be used?

As a fertilizer, ammonium nitrate is all nitrogen (35-0-0) and should be used only where you need a high nitrogen content such as growing grass where you want excessive green growth. If you have had a soil test done and an area is low in N, it can be applied according to the recommendations; usually in the 0.5-1 pound per 100 square feet range. Using a nitrogen sidedress will accelerate plant growth. With tomatoes, excess N will cause lots of foliage growth at the expense of fruit production.

If you are sick of an old tree stump in the yard, you can mix it with diesel fuel and blow that sucker to smithereens.... probably along with the rest of the neighborhood. Or you can mix it with water, heat it up, trap the gasses and have a nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sniffing party.

Paul, I gotta thank you again. Was at a birthday party last evening. One of the farmers there made a comment about a delivery of ammonium nitrate. (I don't know if he was talking about getting some or the price, he was standing behind me when I heard him) I calmly turned and asked him if he was building a bomb or making laughing gas.
Bet you can just about guess the looks I got from that comment!!!
When we got in the car the first thing my DH asked me was how in the world I would happen to know something like that!!! All the credit went to T-ville.
