Default Varieties for 2011

I'm having a tough time deciding on the varieties to grow next year. I would like a good mix of tomatoes from all sizes. Here is what I'm thinking about growing next year. Any advice or changes to the list?

Aussie
Mexico
Box Car Willie
Zogola
Kellog's Breakfast
Eva's Purple Ball
Druzba
Red Brandywine
German Head

Of the ones on your list, I've grown Druzba and loved it.

To round out your choices, I'd add a green-when-ripe.

Looks like a great list. I'd switch Kellogg's Breakfast to KBX since you're in TN and personally I'd add something like Matt's Wild Cherry or Coyote.

I've grown all that you list and I think it's a good list. BTW the proper name is Eva, not Eva's Purple Ball. I don't know who changed that several years ago but Joe Bratka did name it Eva Purple Ball.

I could say where's the cherries, where are the gold/oranges, other than KB, where's some green when ripes, where's some dark colored ones, and make suggestions for all of them but obviously you've listed the number of plants you can handle and to suggest others might knock out some already listed.

So...... why not grow what you have b'c you've got plenty of time in future years to add this or that or delete this or that, and everyone has to start somewhere in terms of the varietis they start out with.

Carolyn...I'm a littlle confused. The original name was simply "Eva?" Or did you mean "Eva" singular in "Eva Purple Ball" and not "Eva'S Purple Ball" plural?

It sure looks like a good one, I just wish it was a little bigger. Great looking.

The original and correct name is Eva Purple Ball.

Pending taste results when the current fruit ripens -
Cherokee Purple
Gold Medal (can anyone give opinions on this variety?)

Things I definitely want to grow next year (if I can make room for them...) that I'd recommend to others -
Snowberry
Black Cherry
Mexico Midget
Sungold
Cuostralee
Brandywine OTV
Opalka

Nice list. The only thing I would say is add an early variety such as sungold or moscow. This will help dull the pain of waiting for the really good ones to come in.

SabreTooth,
I've grown all but one of those you listed. Some did very well for me, like Box-car Willie, which I've grown year after year until just recently. Others didn't do well at all. My Mexico was a gigantic plant, taller than even my largest Brandywines. It produced very large tomatoes all in excess of a pound or two, but I never got to taste a single one as every darned one got Blossom end rot.
Eva Purple Ball produced lots and lots of small tomatoes, in the 2-3 oz range. just not my type of tomato.
Kelloggs Breakfast is a great tasting orange tomato that I found is best if it doesn't get as much water as others. It has a creamy texture and a great taste if you don't allow it to get mushy by overwatering. It's always in my Gardens.
Red Brandywine is a great producing R.L. plant that can really put out some tomatoes. They are a little smaller than the pink Brandywines but still worth growing. Didn't make it into y gardens this year as I felt Tarasenko6 and Preacher Joe were better reds. Starting to think I should have switched the preacher joe's for either Red Brandywine or Box-car Willie.
I would suggest adding Bear Creek, or Dana's Dusky Rose or Amazon Chocolate to add some Blacks, and in pinks...Brandywine, either cowlicks or Glicks, and Barlow Jap has been quite impressive for me the past two years.
Whatever you decide on, I wish you a great year and much luck!
Enjoy!
