Black Cherry Question
I am not sure if it is just the nature of the beast since this is my first year growing Black Cherry. I find the skins quite tough. Is this normal?

This is my first year growing them, and they taste amazing, but the skins are also quite tough on mine. My sister peels hers, actually, because she finds the skins much too thick.

Not for me are the skins tough and I've grown it every year since Linda Sapp first listed this variety, bred by her now deceased husband in the TGS catalog. Maybe that's 5 years now? I can't remember.

I am a newbie this season and am thinking about growing Black Cherry in 2011.....Outside of the tough skin.......How is the taste of the actual fruit? I read Sungold cherrys tend to split a lot.

I find the skins have a bit of a "pop" - but I don't mind a bit. I wouldn't actually call them tough - but they are a bit thicker than sungold for example, at least for me. I like sungold a lot too - very very different taste, sungold is very sweet.
As far as taste of Black Cherry - I think these are the first cherry tomatoes I've ever had that don't taste like cherry tomatoes. They taste better than almost any large tomato I've ever had. I absolutely LOVE these tomatoes - to me, they're as good as the Black Krim's, pinks, etc. - but in a small package. They're the first variety on my "must have" list. Can you tell I'm a fan? |

We have 3 plants growing this year and they are just starting to produce. I can't wait till we actually can pick enough that they make it inside without being eaten. The few we've had so far have been fantastic!

In comparison to other tomatoes in my garden right now, they seem like a thicker skinned tomato. Maybe tough isn't the right word.
I haven't had a problem with splitting though like I have on my other cherry (still unsure of the variety lol). |

Mine are thick, and split like crazy. But they're prolific and very delicious....especially cooked lightly with olive oil and garlic

I peel mine too, when I have the patience. Vast improvement in the tasting experience with peeling. Actually I peel all of my heirlooms, but its a little easier to do a Brandy Sudduth than a Black Cherry.

Maybe it's a Canadian thing. I've never had Black Cherry have a tough skin on me, but I've had this issue with Sungold, to the point that I sometimes spit out the skin. Never had Sungolds split before though.
