young tomato plants with buds but no flowers inside
has anyone here encountered plants that have fully opened buds with no flowers inside? will post pictures soon.
i don't see any petals or remnants of petals so i have no idea if there were any flowers in there in the first place. thanks. |

I gennerally see that on larger beefsteak plants and they are usually just the first few flower clusters then the plants starts producing normal flower clusters.

Maybe dropped blossoms due to weather.

I would say quite common on first fruit cluster and not an aborted flower as there was no flower to abort just the green outside of the bud that never developed into a flower.
I know there was a thread on here this spring with the same question. Went and found it: http://www.tomatoville.com/showthrea...ght=flower+bud Craig Last edited by Gobig_or_Gohome_toms; August 23, 2010 at 12:33 PM. Reason: found link |

I had the same thing happen to my plants. It'll right itself eventually.

I have had some where I am looking at a bud that looks like
it is about to open, I can see end of the pistil sticking out, and it looks like it is dying. Further investigation found a flower's ovaries but no anther cone or corona of petals inside. I am wondering if it had already self-pollenated before the flower opened, and the anther cone and corolla just dried up and fell out when a bee pried open the green sepals of the bud. (I first spotted these late in the season, and I do not know yet if fruit will develop there.)

got another tomato plant doing the same thing. i guess it's a normal thing for pubescent tomatoes. the first plant i mentioned already has normal flowers developing. so i guess it's good to go. =d
