Correction; Big Sungold Select and Big Sungold

This seems to be the only way that I can let all of you who got BSS from me or from Brad, as well as Tania and Jeff who are offering it commercially, I think those are the only two and if you know of other who offer it commercially please let me knowof others, about the true background of both Big Sungold and Big Sungold Select.

Each year Reinhard Kraft and I communicate about what he might have that I'd like and what he might like that I have or could get for him. And we've been doing this for at least 15 years or so and I've sent him over 300 varieties to keep going b'c I told him that I no longer could do that.

In my latest em to him I told him about the problem with BSS throwing some off colroed fruits and that it was doing the same for Brad Gates to whom he had also sent seeds.

I'm not going to cut and paste from his e-mail, but here's the essence of what he said.

He did not develop BSS or BS himself from Sungold F1. He said that someone in Austria who was also working with Sungold F1 sent Manfred Hamm some selections and that he, Reinhard, grew some of them out and found one with bigger fruits which he then called Big Sungold Select. And then said if he'd known it was unstable as it turned out to be he wouldn't have sent out seeds. Big Sungold was also one that was sent to Manfred initially.

He did dehybridize and offer Sungold Select and Sungold Select II and feels that both of them have taste closer to the F1 than do BS and BSS.

So I'm glad I brought up the problem with BSS or I wouldn't have found out what I posted above. I was going to go back to his website and reread what he said about BSS to see if he mentioned where it came from. And though I can read some German there are usually words I have to look up, which takes time, so sometimes I don't know everything that's said about a specific variety.

I'm bringing this thread, with no replies, ahem, back up to the top for those who keep data about histories and who did what about tomato varieties.

And that's b'c it's a significant correction to what I and others understood without my knowing differently from Reinhard Kraft recently.

That explains why BSS wasn't close to what I expected.
Sungold Select II is very tasty and extremely close to the F1
in all attributes. Although BSS was the right shape, size, and
color as expected, the taste was forgettable at the least.
